Release everything. Simply not as physical releases with months of promotion, press releases, interviews, books, etc. It's all about the context.

Why? I've heard from multiple elite collectors that it was the best version.

Well, yes he diluted his legacy with much of his post-‘93 output. I wouldn’t go so far as to say “every.” But your point is valid.
.
So is mine though. The issuance of every musical brain fart lingering in the vault will eventually make more than a “scratch.” Time will of course tell, but the greater populace (of those who are paying attention to the expanded posthumous releases; admittedly a relative minority) is now learning that the much ballyhooed vault doesn’t contain much more than fool’s gold.
.
Hopefully the SDE become impractical from a financial standpoint and cease to be released.
I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

LOL actually I think it was an interesting concept. Might have been interesting if they were in Graffiti Bridge. They had some of the Lovesexy look. It seems like things were moving forward with them as a protege band.

Then I imagine it's a very sad time for you to be a Prince fan. Both because of the opinions you express but also because any forum is exploding with praise and love for the sets.

In fact, I don't think most fan bases would suggest the things you do. Fool's gold? Just a very sad take to me.

You think what you think and while I disagree entirely, it's not like the Estate is listening to you so you're not doing much harm.

.

Now may I just remind you a few very basic principles:

1/ Freedom of opinion does not mean that all opinions are of equal value.

2/ Freedom of speech does not mean that because one can express each and every idea that crosses their mind, one should.

3/ This forum is about what people make it about. I for one have always fought against it being a forum for "opinions" in favor of making it a forum for knowledge.

.

This is not specifically to say that you're wrong to say what you're saying about the vault, as I said you're not harming anyone with your posts. It's a response to your post about "opinions" specifically, and a general reminder.

Good point lol

I read it because sometimes people have opinions about what they want the Estate to do that conflict with knowledge, in the sense that there are certain things they don't know or misunderstood about P's catalogue/recording sessions.

Not your case to be clear, your opinion is pure opinion.

I also was curious about the thread because its premise is so uttelry absurd that I wanted to see what'd happen.

I want to say I don't want any more remasters. I really do.

Purple Rain was not a remaster. It was made louder.

1999 was not a remaster. It was damage limitation. But thankfully it wasn't messed around with too much. I'll still take the original CD vs the remaster.

SOTT was not a remaster. It was an exercise in turning the bass up to 11.

Fudge it.

I don't want any more remasters.

If they did to Around The World In A Day or Dirty Mind what they did to Sign of the Times I just might ... type REALLY ANGRILY and that may result in breaking my keyboard.

Can you imagine Paisley Park with a super thick heavy bassline, Condition of the Heart sounding like Do Me, Baby (take 7).

No thank you.

Huh, a lot of people seem to like the sound of the last two remasters. Nobody is forcing you to replace your originals if you're happy with the way they sound.

I never said I'm happy with the originals either. But for the most part, I will use the original SOTT for the tracks I love. I'm still seething about It and If I Was Your Girlfriend.

People often are duped into thinking louder is better. And listening is in itself and skill.

In the case of Prince many of us (me included) are absolute frikkin' nuts for any morsel of a new release.

We get so excited for it and so want our Prince fix that we'll accept almost anything different.

The problem, specifically in relation to the SOTT SDE remasters (ignoring Housequake & PITS because they are lost causes already) is that it that the bass has been ramped up sooooooooooooo much, changing the tracks dramatically and adding stuff that just wasn't there.

The original release is in no way perfect but could be subtly improved upon (admittedly not by much considering the state of the actual masters though).

But we've gone from one extreme of audio presentation (muted, low bass) to the other extreme (bass-Overlord, loud) without even stopping to see any nuanced change.

There was no need to do what they did. You could improve the bass subtly. Or not.

Question, since most ppl today stream: are the old masters replaced by the remasters on these platforms, or do they coexist?

Depends on what labels decide to do, but as for Sign O' the Times the original messed up version is still available, with the remastered version as an alternative.

Edit: also just to be clear I mean Spotify's version of the album is messed up, not the actual original album. Spotify sourced tracks from different sources and the volume levels are different from track to track.

Oh wow, that's nasty sad

There was a thread once also about how some single edits found their way into albums, etc. This is fucked up.

Under these circumstances the remasters r better, no?

But yeah, my question was exclusively about PR, 1999 and STT not all albums by all artists.

Streaming (or specifically Spotify) also has all sorts of volume normalizers spread across the entire platform to prevent massive jumps in sound when people are listening on shuffle. I believe it lowers the volume on everything to the lowest track on a playlist or album. Now it doesn't always work (the volume jump for Kiss on Parade used to be shocking, I think it's a little better now, still the single version though) but it definitely messes with the sound across the board.

Also, I believe the wrong versions thing wasn't necessarily a streaming issue, I think it was the digital catalogue in general. It's been a long time since I checked but I think if you bought, e.g. parade, digitally on itunes you got the wrong version of Kiss there as well.

In regards the three albums, SOTT and Purple Rain have the original digital versions as well as the remastered, 1999 has been completely replaced with the remaster (Of course this means that I would Die 4 U is the single version on the non-remaster) Don't go looking for consistency lol

Also, the transition between IGBABN and Adore is utterly ruined - the crowd cheering cuts off, and then fades back in again for the (I think) Girl 6 master of Adore. Shameful.

It doesnt fade in on Girl 6, Adore starts abruptly (it's the same edit as the albume xactly). Is there really a fade in on Spotify? eek

but you can't seriously be defending D&P, Symbol and Graffitti Bridge as 'undiluted'.

The hit singles are part of his main legacy though, that's the only real reason I was including it. I suppose i'm arguing that his legacy was set in stone by 1993's Hits/B-sides set, even if it took a while for the rest of the world to catch up with him. Perhaps it'll change as time goes on, certainly he deserves to have more of his career recognised by the wider public, but I can't see it happening myself.

Not hits wise, and there's so much overlapping it can be hard to know where to draw the line, at least before Emancipation.
