Love the quality of the recording. It might have benefitted from the crowd noise being a bit higher, but its still great.

I was at this gig so it makes hearing it a again even more special, even though it was a cold damp day. Glad to hear the songs omitted from the film. Girls and Boys sounds sublime. I remember doing the 'arms thing' with Prince like it was yesterday.

From an audio perspective it blows the live discs from 1999 SDE and Purple Rain DE out of the water. The stereo mixing is spot on.

This is one i've had for a while but the quality is outstanding! The standouts are Housequake which is slightly different from the usual run thru, four with sheila's fantastic drumming and the version of beautiful night here extended is amazing

Rather surprise that people are praising the quality. It's not bad, but we certainly have bootlegs that are better.

What I find interesting is that this is a soundboard recording, which would suggest that they don't have the multitracks to any show that wasn't used in the SOTT movie (which they supposedly can't use).

Do you mean in sound or performance?

Personally, This is the best show I've heard sonically, it's just not the show I would have picked based on performance.

In regard to the multitracks, I thought Utrect was the first set up with the recording equipment that was used later used for the Antwerp/Rotterdam performances, That's from memory, so I could be wrong.

According to the Steve Hoffman forums the Utrecht concert has tape speed issues that make it run a tiny bit slower than it should

I listened some songs yesterday, not all the cds. The sound is really really good, but IMHO Prince's voice is too much covered by instruments...

Listening to this in hi-res 24bit download, sounds perfect, has an edge over the cd-rip.

The audio quality sounds great. But I must say, I've never been a fan of When Doves Cry with horns in the arrangement.

My box hasn't arrived yet, so I have to do with the rips out there, and two different ones have a crackle on 1999, around the 1:32 marker, where the band shouts the title loudly. Does that appear on the actual LP/CD as well or is it just badly ripped?

Yeah you can hear it really well on that, LGC, and 1999. Speeding up the audio to the correct speed is easy at least

idk kind of feeling like i shouldn't have to tinker with tracks that i paid over a hundred dollars for, or for some in the case of the vinyl, several hundreds.

may-b just me. don't know Howe they could've missed this one during production and qc

Yeah I am honestly not sure how this tape speed error got past the ears of everyone, including those who had to listen to the entire show when mastering it!

At least it can be fixed, that is better than for example some of the tracks on PR deluxe being unable to be fixed because of the sources that they were from

To my untrained and ignorant ears the whole concert sounds flat and lifeless. It may be because the crowd is barely audible, or something about the sharpness of the drums, I dunno. Like I said, I'm no expert, but the whole thing sounds lacking any energy. Loving the set though, feels like Xmas came early. Quite enjoyed the dvd too, a strange little gig but with plenty of genuinely charming glimpses into Prince's personality.

Just started listening to this after concentrating on the vault tracks.

SOTT
Wow, I’d forgotten how great that intro to Sign O’ The Times and the whole tune sounded when played live. Awesome start, had to turn it up high.

Play In The Sunshine
A bit busy, all the sounds, e.g. vocals and instruments, seem on top of each other, sort of each at the same level. Also the playing seems a bit fast, like in a rush. Start and towards the finish seem to me, to have elements of Pussy Control, which is interesting.

Little Red Corvette
Short blast of LRC but the pace of the show seems to get back on the right track with this, before the start of...

Housequake
Love the rumbling bass, or is it backed up by keys too! Anyway, great funk. Voice at the end a bit crackly, or is that how it’s meant to be?

Girls & Boys
Love this tune, glad the dirty horns are on it, plus chicken grease!

Slow Love
Nicely slows it down for a pause. But loving hearing all the instrumentation on this, seems the clutter on Play In The Sunshine, has calmed and each sound and vocal is allowed to be heard more separately. Nice.

Take The “A” Train/Pacemaker/I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
I like how the starters build into the main course. I also like being able to pick out the playing of the various instruments and vocals. The guitar solo around the 4:40 mark is restrained, then around 5:40 it takes that turn when I was expecting it to rip, but it keeps steady for minute or two, and starts to build but only really kicks in for 20 seconds or so at the end. Ok I suppose.

Hot Thing
Bongos to start, I think. Bit of chat with Levi and Wally then it’s like I’m mesmerised by the sound in my living room. Loving it. Best tune so far of the live show (or was it Sign O’ The Times).

Four
Starts like a bit of an interlude. It’s a bit of awhile since I listened to the Madhouse album and this tune. Thought it’d only be a minute or two, and at that point checked and realised, had to wait around 4 minutes more for If I Was Your Girlfriend. Still some half decent solos, e.g. Levi, Sheila. Ends like an interluse.

If I Was Your Girlfriend
Glad this started up after 4, a fuller band sound than the more sparse, haunting sound to the studio version. I like it like this too. Will enjoy coming back to this.

Let’s Go Crazy
Everything turned up to max again! I like the arrangement though, especially the guitar duelling bongos around the 3 minute mark. Go funking [sic] crazy. Indeed. Bit of guitar duelling crowd chants too, before that sweet solo ending. Love it.

When Doves Cry
With horns and squelchy synths. Band singing a bit off. Back to the squelching sounds that I like, more horns. Then I thought it was going to turn into a Black Album sound but went into...

Purple Rain
Everyone knows this tune, so won’t dwell, except to say thankfully the guitar dominates, maybe saving his voice as not much singing. Did the crowd sing it, but they’ve not included/recorded that?

1999
Pretty standard arrangement, but sounds like a kazoo from 1 to 2 minutes. At 3 minutes it goes into a baby crying and crowd noise. They’ve left the stage for a break, but back for...

Forever In My Life
This lasts for 13 minutes so should be interesting. Starts with some really laid back guitar, then lovely vocals from Prince. It’s building nicely, with the band joining in on vocals. At about 4 minutes it changes, getting funkier but still chilled. Boni has a bit of a nice sing for a few minutes, cool playing underneath can still be heard clearly. This reminds me of an aftershow, about at 8 minutes, some intricate guitar playing for a minute, I presume by Prince, followed by an organ solo (Fink?). I like the vibe on this.

Kiss
Nice, not an out of the ordinary version, but good to hear in this quality on a live show.

The Cross
Always loved this and sounds great live. His voice sounds a bit croaky in parts on this, not a quality issue, just probably due to singing so much. Doesn’t detract from a great performance.

It Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
Encore...liking it better than the album version, seems more of a jam. A bit of a distracting synth sound in the mix for the first minute or so, like a laser. Sheila’s rap at about 3 minutes, moves around, was she walking round the stage? Funk properly gets going around 5 minutes, break for Eric’s Sax solo, then Miko starts to have a go but Eric takes over, meanwhile Levi adds to the funk stomping. Think at 8:30 he gets annoyed with the drum mistake he didn’t call. Rounds out with a funk work out.

Overall a top quality sounding live show, which will be worth many listens. Highlights for me Sign O’ The Times, Hot Thing and If I Was Your Girlfriend.
There may or may not be something coming!
