Id never heard this song until this set. What boot is this on? This is what you want...This is what you get.

I am just gonna mention my personal highlights of this disc:
It Ain't Over Til The Fat Lady Sings is very enjoyable too to me, Madhouse style music. I love this type of 'jazzy' jams and I always enjoy hearing Eric Leeds playing his sax. I love the funkiness of Blanche, this is a great track. Not too sure about the production of it, but it is such a jam I don't mind it so much.
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Now we have five versions of Crucial. This alternate lyrics take is interesting, but the sax version or (7:23) Guitar Version would have been better.

It Be's Like That Sometimes
Perfect Pop Song. And my favorite on the entire set with Love And Sex. ON INITIAL LISTENING! I like Prince more when he can connect with an wider audience. He still has his own, completely unique sound. But if more people can relate or appreciate the musical impact, that's a big plus. Blanche and Soul Psycadelicide are funk jams and by default always ok in my book. Still, not album track material, only jams. I will return to Cocoa Boys and others you guys are giving high praise, and they probably will grow on me, maybe even become favourites from the set. But for now I will call IBLTS and Love and Sex masterpieces. [Edited 9/30/20 13:28pm]

Is it me or is something odd about the mix?... Like i can barely hear what he’s actually saying...and what i do hear, I’d rather just listen to the superior lyrics... Ultimately i think his vocals should be slightly louder in the mix.... [Edited 9/30/20 21:39pm]

1. Train - A nice song 2. It Ain't Over 'Til The Fat Lady Sings - It's ok but nothing special 3. Eggplant (Prince vocal) - I'm glad to finally be able to hear this but prefer the Wendy version 4. Everybody Want What They Don't Got - I like this song but it's too short 5. Blanche - A decent track 6. Soul Psychodelicide - It's really great 7. The Ball - Amazing song and glad it's finally released 8. Adonis And Bathsheba - Very beautiful song 8. Forever In My Life (early vocal studio run-through) - Better than the album version imo 9. Crucial (alternate lyrics) - My favorite version of Crucial now 10. The Cocoa Boys - Love it except for the crowd noise 11. When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes - Nice song I haven't heard before 12. Witness 4 The Prosecution (version 2) - A favorite and best version of the song 13. It Be's Like That Sometimes - New to me and I really like it Welcome 2 The Dawn

The corresponding lines bug me on the CB 98 version. They’re just slightly better here. But the best version is not concentrating on the lyrics at the start and just kind of getting a general romantic feel, and that’s easier to do on this version. . Btw, this disc is slammin. Is there a list somewhere of the bootleg tracks that we can now delete from our collections?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Here's my list of what I deleted so far. Of course It is not common consensus, and some may keep these bootlegs, knowing slight differences from released version. . Teacher, Teacher All My Dreams Can I Play With U? Miles Davis Final Mix Witness 4 The Prosecution #2 (version 1) Interlude - Wendy (Colors) In A Large Room With No Light Train Everybody Want What They Don't Got The Ball Adonis And Bathsheba Witness 4 The Prosecution #3 (version 2) Emotional Pump Cosmic Day Wally Jealous Girl Big Tall Wall A Place In Heaven #2 (Lisa vocal) Wonderful Day . And we can aslo delete "Welcome 2 The Rat Race", "Red Riding Hood", "Break My Heart", "Souly-A-Colia" and so on...

I wonder why they didn't include Wendy's version of Eggplant. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing set and the best Prince release in many years imo but it annoys me that they left off songs like Jealous Girl (version 1) and Crucial (sax version). It makes it feel incomplete but perhaps someday the estate will release the missing tracks on a vault box set. Welcome 2 The Dawn

He didn't record it during this period and it wasn't intended for SOTT. I could do without two versions of Eggplant or any other song for that matter just to include someone else's vocals tbh. They could've left off Lisa's APIH and I would not mind one bit. It's already a pity to me that, by necessity and for completion, that we have two spots on the set taken by clips of W&L soloing.

1. Train - OK, not my favourite Dream Factory outtake. Probably prefer Mavis' version. 3121... Don't U Wanna Come?

Does anybody know the lyrics to 'It Be's Like That Sometimes' please?
I've searched here and generally online and there's nothing out there yet. I struggle sometimes to hear his lyrics as I'm a bit deaf.
Thank you. | |

Surprised Eggplant isn't getting more love. The song is so Prince and got a great hook. Could've been a hit imo.

Seriously. I've heard The Cocoa Boys demo before, and never got THAT excited upon first listen (I guess the Prince scatting and harmonizing saxophones is the highlight for you guys). But now I've listened to the released version a few more times, and it's kicking my ass!
I love the line and horns when he says "We do the wooden leg!" This LP 7/8 sequencing is legendary. Easily my favorite part on the set. So much ridiculously good material. [Edited 10/23/20 11:12am] [Edited 10/23/20 11:14am]

For some reason, When The Dawn sounds like it's from 81 or something. And then there's the "Everybody let's work" line too. But that beat sounds straight out of Controversy or V6 sessions. Maybe at some points it even sounds like 1985. But it never sounds like 1986 to me, he had stopped using that hi hat on the 2 and 4 thing by then, I thought. I wonder if there's an earlier version and this is a remake. Wouldn't surprise me as he had been doing a ton of rerecording that time of the year.

i was listening to The Cocoa Boys last night and i noticed at the end the background vocals sing "we are beautiful, it's gunna be a beautiful night". i hadn't noticed this before and it felt like a real relevatory moment to me. it also makes me sad that it doesn't have Prince's vocals doing the horn parts - that made the song for me! [Edited 10/27/20 6:22am] eye dont think U heard me . . .

. Maybe those multitrack tapes in the vault contain many other examples of this (i.e. Prince's vocals as placeholders for actual horns)? Which we'll never hear as they're obviously not meant to be included in the final mix.
