I really love the mix on Soul Psychodelicide. Everyone sounds so damn good and the edit is perfect. Love Prince's commands looming in the background with that echo effect. Cool shit.

Looking at the fact that Prince editted and overdubbed Soul Psychodelicide to form a long live party jam, I wonder if it was ever in contention for the 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night' slot.

Oh yeah, I've always thought this since I 1st heard it, but if you remember that track Kanye, Rihanna & McCartney released several years back...I've always said the chorus really reminds me of the chorus of "Train". Y'all know which one I'm talking about...

I definitely love it. Almost went on my final "Revolution" tracklist album, but replaced it with "A Place In Heaven" + "Colors" for W+L's input. But not only does the track remind me of 70's Chicago...it also has a "Paisley Park" feel to it IMO.

This is why this era is so great. Every song, even in the 3 hours of unreleased stuff, is different and takes you on a journey. 2 minutes and sets the perfect mood.

I wondered the same but it appears he did it immediately after the rehearsal was recorded, i.e. long before CB86 was conceived. Funnily enough in terms of chords I think you could overdub the vocals from IGBABN on it and it'd work, though.

Also sounds reminiscent of a Wendy & Lisa song from Fruit At The Bottom (sorry can't remeber exactly at the minute, maybe Lolly Lolly?).

'Soul Psychodelicide' has overdubbed vocals from P and Lisa, new guitar solos, some minor keyboard parts, drum fills (to help disguise edits), and substantial horns parts added later; much of the underlying saxophone work may in fact have been rerecorded in the studio.

.

I would venture to speculate that it may not even be drawn literally from the same rehearsal jam recording we have, or at least the circulating portion of it (although it is very similar, most likely from further takes or another tape laid down on the same date). As you already know, something of a 'Data Bank', proto-IGBABN chimera with its repertoire of Counter-Revolution band cues.

.

-

'When the Dawn of the Morning Comes' (and its title) sounds like it is a re-recording and re-working of something from quite a bit earlier. I wouldn't be surprised to learn one day that it recycles (musical ideas, if nothing else) from another late '81-early '83 Vault track. Pre-1999-ish bassline and early-early 1980s Linn, some occasional 1999-ish rhytym guitar (but also some 1986 style playing later on), a more youthful falsetto style than one would expect for the time period(?)— with proto-NPG soul (and soul claps) and Sheila's percussion layered over it. A mixture of analog, digital and Fairlight keyboards.

Sounds like a deliberate wind down to me. It's meant to be disjointed.

The Cocoa Boys is way more finished than the bootleg... saddly full horns.... but Nice

Some elements that ended up in "It's gonna be a beautiful night" and "Positivity"

Crucial ...alt lyrics indeed... wow wow! unexpected

i never liked Crucial. P's voice sounded like a grandmother tryin to desperatly nice like tell a teen its time to wear a bra-but inverted. The long version. But hearing this. wow. wOW. WOW. the drama he is known for is fleshed out with the music. His voices. really disliked it. would get up and fast forward it. But now? nope. Replayed it. and then Emotional Pump- Was P workin at a car wash while he was in college (please don't ask me what that means. Even i'm not sure-but feels right). But i dig the music now that i can hear it clearly. Or maybe i just miss him so much i look for him in the music and find him...and that soooo alright with me.>

oh lawd im in these crucial emotional pump streetz!! P pimped me.

AGAIN!!

in the spirit posting KrayKrayishish - i still hate edits and the later version of big tall wall-makes me want to visit my guidence counseler!

When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes:

The vocals seem a bit low in the mix for my ears, also the normal and high voice seem to compete a bit, but this one will probably grow on me!

I'm not a bootleg hunter / collector / listener. Because of that I've not heard most of the vault stuff.

So...

Absolute genius. So many musical ideas in one track.

The best horns ever on any Prince track EVER. EVER.

Just such a shame the audio quality is atrotious.

Sounded like it was recorded live from the venue latrine.

But still GENIUS.

Absolute.

The way it fades out sounds very badly done, as if there is more but it has been edited down.

STILL GENIUS.

And I love the best English accent since Don Cheadle. "A little scam"

TOTAL GENIUS.

Made my weekend, made my 2020.

agreed on coco boys being 10/10. the previously circulating version was on constant rotation and this full version delivers even more. on paper i'd say it's too busy, but it works somehow. what a masterpiece. this is the type of thing that i couldn't see working on any album, this piece has to stand tall for itself.

1. Train

It's cool but I don't think it deserves the praise
2. It Ain't Over 'Til The Fat Lady Sings

neat
3. Eggplant (Prince vocal)

New song to me. Neve rheard Wendy's version so it's a good filler track
4. Everybody Want What They Don't Got

Could've made some album at some point
5. Blanche

Funky fun
6. Soul Psychodelicide

Would be great edited down to six minutes
7. The Ball

work in progress
8. Adonis And Bathsheba

Prince rules at these kinds of ballads
8. Forever In My Life (early vocal studio run-through)

Marvelous
9. Crucial (alternate lyrics)

Every version is great but why not sax?
10. The Cocoa Boys

Better than an ouutake
11. When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes

I like it.
12. Witness 4 The Prosecution (version 2)

marvelous

13. It Be's Like That Sometimes

a throway for Prince

Anyone else notice how in the book Duane says It Be's Like That Sometimes was a precursor to the Lovesexy title track?
