Really interesting ideas. Shows how well the songs hold up as compositions after all these years.

Thanx 4 letting us know. Pretty cool reinterpretations, but I'm only digging "Uptown" 4 the long-haul and have added it 2 my workout playlist. It takes me back 2 mid-80's Synth-pop.

Mediocre, he's monotonous with his voice, no dynamics. I can tolerate Uptown as a fun club jam, but overall NO. I at least respect him for giving the album its propers.

Agree.

I (only) like that tune too.

The rest isn't quite the stand out as a whole album of covers.

Or to quote Prince; ''Don't Play Me''.

No.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You seriously think people aren't allowed to record covers of others' music? jesus.

You should watch Prince interviews more. He talked about this (I think it was on George Lopez, but I forget off hand; he also alluded to it a bit with Mel B.)

Do you think Prince "let" everyone cover his music by choice? He'd probably have kept a tighter reign on his music had he had the choice on a case by case basis. In copyright, there's a thing call compulsory license. It compels an artist to allow others to cover their songs (meaning they can't refuse). The original publisher and license holder of the song should get a letter of intention from the person covering the music. The publisher/holder will also get paid for the cover, so every copy sold promotes a royalty for the publisher et al.

So it's not about the estate blindly letting something happen, really. It doesn't work that way. Copyright law allows this person to cover Prince's songs, and even compile an album as such. I mean, we have Rebeeca Romijn Stamos recording "Darling Nikki" for heaven's sake. hahaha

But short answer: yeah, any jackoff can re-record something in their lavoratory. And clearly they did.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Surprised he never actively tried to change that law

Remember Prince disapproved of Rod Stewart's version of Peach? I think the argument some of us are making here follows on from that episode.

I mean, it'd be a bitch move on his part. Whether he liked a cover or not, he got paid for it.

It's a bit of an odd law that allows for it, but it's also part of the music business. The same with sound alikes. How many shitty Prince biographies have we watched that have a "1999," "Let's Go Crazy" or "When Doves Cry" sound-alike? Those sorts of things, and parodies/satire, are allowed. Copyright law mostly protects the creator, but it's also there to not stifle other artists from being inspired or creating something similar but not encroaching on the original. I mean, imagine if he told Stevie Nicks, "don't 'rewrite' my song," or Journey, "You can't record 'Faithfully,' it's just 'Purple Rain' in another key." It'd be a major dickhead move.

He was better off getting paid. And even he said to Mel B. that a lot of people want a piece of the purple pie, but as long as their intentions were pure and honest, he was fine with people covering his music.

edit: There was a thread recently re: Speech from Arrested Development talked about how Prince charged him $100,000 for the sample of "Tennessee," in the same named song. He felt the pinch at first, but later realized how Prince actually did him a favor with that, and taught him some things about the business later.
