where do you stand on soundboard recordings?

i know a lot of fans and collectors love them, but for someone like prince, who used a lot of drum machines live (sometimes i wish he didnt!), soundboards can sound quite flat and 'dead' almost. devoid of atmosphere like you get with a proper live recording. i can see why prince wouldnt have been so keen to have these circulating....

I understand why you´d prefer audience recordings, and there are some where I´d say that they prove your point (my personal favorites being Paradiso 1995, first night, and Le Bataclan in 2002 ) but I think it depends on the venue. I agree with you to an extent but in general I still prefer soundboard recordings over audience recordings and I´m quite happy with the way the drums and the LM-1 sound during the Birthday gig at First Avenue, 1984. I´ve never heard soundboard recordings of the Paradiso or Bataclan concerts mentioned above so I can´t really compare the drum sound but I think most fans definitely prefer soundboard recordings, even though they can sound a tad too sterile if you can´t hear the audience at all.

You´re actually the first orger I´ve seen on this board who prefers audience recordings over soundboard. I´m not sure if you´re serious or just trolling. lol

im totally serious!

this post was inspired by hearing a paris 87 soundboard recording on youtube.

while it was cool to hear a show from this tour that wasnt the film (the one ive listened to and memorised so much over the years i never bothered to seek out a proper show from this tour until now strangely), it lacked atmosphere and ambience, ie the things that make a live show a live show.

if i wanted a rehearsal, a soundboard recording would do fine.

but for a concert, they just seem to lack the thing that makes a concert a concert, the audience. and the perspective of hearing it from that position, rather than the position of the engineer.

The best place to stand is by the live soundboard engineer. And get them to pass you the recording on a thumbdrive. wink

I've never noticed it being an issue with Prince's music, but it definitely is true of a lot of drum machine based music. You need the sound in the room mixed in to get life in it or it can sound dull and lack the punch you'd expect coming right out of the board.

Because you can hear the difference in the lovesexy shows. you just have to compare the lovesexy recording from Dortmund with the soundboard recording of the tour from Japan.

I remember those Sendai, Nagoya, and Tokyo soundboard bootlegs. They were so great. I listened to them all the time. Little differences here and there, but mostly the same show. I sorta hated that he cut a lot of "Erotic City" a ways into the tour, and went right into "Housequake."

"Seeeennndaaaaiiiii...."

I wonder, did the Dortmund show ever make it via a soundboard to bootleg? There's the broadcast, but was there an actual soundboard type recording of it?

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

That makes no sense. I can have driven a Rolls Royce but still like a Ford Focus. Just because you've heard something which you think is subjectively better, doesn't mean you can't still like something which isn't as technically good.

I like soundboard recordings, I like official live recordings, I also like audience recordings. The caveat on all of those is, if they are decent recordings. I've head shitty audience recordings and I've heard shitty soundboards.

You don't seem to want discussion, you just seem to want to read your opinions typed by somebody else.

RIP sad

not at all.

i was giving my personal opinion.

just because i give a view of my own, doesnt mean i want everyone else to parrot it.

the way debate works is one person gives a view, another person gives their own view, in response to thae previous one, or just one of their own accord, and so forth.

You haven't said anything worth debating.

Can you provide some examples of "good" live albums that aren't soundboard?

metallic KO - the stooges

live - donny hathaway

get yer yayas out - rolling stones

monterey - hendrix

and thats not even including bootlegs

when i say i dont like soundboard recordings, i mean recordings that are more or less just the band recorded straight to tape, as if it was in the studio almost. great live albums record the crowd, they give you a POV from being in the audience. otherwise you may as well listen to the studio albums.

So, live performces without an audience are by default dismissed?
that;s kind of shortsighted.

So nothing under 30 years old. Got it.

Well anyway, as seen with One Nite Alone Live, soundboard recordings do pick up the audience and as seen with Purple Rain and Sign o the Times, you can also edit the audience back in. These are still soundboard recordings.

One of my favorite live boots is The Park II and it is audience recording, but I'd slap someone else's mama for a soundboard copy and I couldn't care less if the audience was heard (though the mics definitely pick them up regardless).

lol@you using youth as your golden ticket

you seem to misunderstand the post.

by soundboard i dont mean professional recordings, i mean sterile live recordings.

this tends to be what soundboard recordings are like in my experience.

but i realise you probably only listen to prince and nothing else so probably arent very aware of what else is out there.

You say you want a discussion but are then rude, dismissive and insulting when someone disagrees with you. That isn't a discussion.

I love them. I happen to have a soundboard of Detroit 2015, the last concert I ever saw of his. When I listen to that, I'm transported back to that day.

Having said that, I'm really more into soundboard rehearsals. The jokes, the banter, stretching out a song for 20 mins or so, etc.

I got rid of all of my audience recording stuff. The quality is so raw and uneven, and you inevitably have someone screaming "It's My Birthday!" or trying to scream out the song title after hearing 2 notes. No thanks.
