The night Prince told Christopher Moltisanti to stop looking at him...

https://youtu.be/FfZ5orxLG8c

Pretty disappointing to me considering Michael Imperioli’s one of my favorite actors and Prince is my fave musician. I always wondered if they met during “Girl Six”, guess they did. Smh.

Those bodyguards are lucky Chris didn't have them whacked smile

I've been listening to this podcast and, if you're a fan of the Sporanos, it's really great.

These stories have come up from time to time and often enough where I don't doubt them. The Guns N Roses story comes to mind. I would have told them to fuck right off. Or would've put on some sunglasses. Or, if I were feeling salty, pulled some binoculars and stared right at him the whole night. You can't enforce where someone LOOKS for christ sake. Go to hell. U don't want anyone ot fucking look at you, GO HOME.

Geez.

We all know he could be a real asshole sometimes but this is some next level diva/paranoia/power trip bullshit. You sit yourself in the VIP section or a crowded place, dressed in sequins, wearing eyeliner and wild and think you can enforce whether people look at you or not? Cocaine induced paranoia combined with accompanying gravitas?

uhhh....

Gonna go with: "No"? Not at all tbh.

Or you mean the part I wrote where if someone sicked bodyguards on me instructing me not to look at them? Yeah...I'd be equal parts angry and bemused in that situation.

I've only made eye contact with Prince twice. Once, I knew to look away because I was staring and I bet he gets tired of that, especially from dudes. The other time he actually shook my hand. So, there you go.

Fully agreed, Herb. He’s a very well-spoken and intelligent man in real life but I heard a little Christopher in him when he said the “4 foot 11 guy in all purple and we can’t look at him?” lol. You can tell that he’s a big Prince fan and there’s a disappointment still that meeting one of his favorites ended so poorly. He keeps going back to it until the end when he says he still considers Prince his friend.

I know Prince had alot of social anxiety — relatable to me — but it’s absolutely facts he went at it wrong sometimes, acting like a fucking dick to people who admire him. Well I can’t relate to Prince’s fame experience but still, it’s manners. Like go get a blowjob from Mayte in the limo instead of sitting in VIP being a frosty douche.

People with social anxiety react differently, right? Just don't stare at people. His excuse is that Prince was small and in all purple, so he thinks it's okay to just look at him? As if he's a zoo attraction or something.

No one said Prince handled that situation well or was being fair but your anger is a bit over the top..especially for a supposed fan. Cocaine induced paranoia? Really...that's a bit much. I feel for MI here but come on, was it worth even mentioning when it happened nearly 20 years before Prince's death.

Some things to consider... that don't excuse P's behavior but might humanize it a bit.

--I do think he had legit social anxiety. When his old school teacher called him skittish and said he was surprised he became famous considering his skittishness...then this obviously goes beyond ego driven self importance.

--People do act weird around Prince. They do stare beyond the point of it being comfortable. Michael may or may not have been staring hardcore...but it is interesting that Prince noticed him over a group of people as someone who made him uncomfortable. Just recently, a fan on twitter posted a 2011 clip of P with a male fan who hung on him a bit too much. He handled it okay and the man was nice and didn't take it too far, but it did to seem a bit awkward.

--Michael never witnessed what Prince said or didn't say to his guards. For all we know, Prince might have only said "I wish that dude would stop staring at me" and then his guards got a little overzealous when they decided to talk to MI about it. Maybe, Prince told them to go over and act like rude pricks...but we don't know.

-- As for Prince being called out for stimultaneously drawing attention to himself while getting pissed that people are staring or looking at him. I want to to bring up another similar antecdote and tendency. Alan Leeds told a story about going out with Prince to a restaurant and Prince leaning in and saying "why does everyone stare at me". Leeds laughed to himself and said "well, you are 5'2", in makeup, in heels and wearing pj's" I bring up the story to point out that both guys mentioned Prince's height first in their list of things that drew attention to Prince...which got me thinking...his height (which is something he can not help) is what people notice first. His height is the thing that is either going to get him stared at or looked over. The clothes and makeup might have very well have been a distraction technique... a way to divert attention. Even Prince alluded in a Tavis Smiley interview that the flashiness was compensation. Also, another thing, remember when Prince stated that he decided never to go out unclean because two girls saw him in natural clothes and no makeup and sort of dissed him for not looking as good? So think about it. Prince goes to a club looking normal so to speak...wouldn't people notice that even more because it is so unusual?

It sounds like I am making a shit ton of excuses for him. I am not. I agree that his tactic sucked and his expectation was unreasonable. But why get that pissed about HIS ISSUES? They don't affect us. They barely affected MI.

Yeah, the coke induced paranoia thing was me being slightly hyperbolic, speculating a little and gaslighting just a tad, but rumors HAVE swilrled on occasion around Prince dabbling some during this specific time and, as a former addict, it would tend to explain a few things (including his weight loss and somewhat gaunt appearance) but it doesn't really matter. I honestly don't care if people use drugs.

And still... I haven't honestly heard any other sort of a more reasonable explanation either - other than "well he was SHY, you see" - so w/e. Yeah...OK...Prince was just so naturally SHY that everyone else was basically Medusa, capable of turning him to stone at a glance. I get the right to privacy, hating the paparazzi and all that but he's a famous dude at some sort of premier party, in a public place, in the VIP section, dressed totally wild, likely drowning in sequins or whatever and totally calling attention to himself, in an environment filled with famous people and likely some photographers.

"Don't LOOK at him" seems a bit over the top, no?

People keep saying "nobody likes to be stared at" and sure. Except that's not what Imperiolli described happening. Prince's body guards were trying to enforce the direction of someone's god damned EYES or so much as casting them in ones direction so just lol at that silliness as any sort of reasonable explanation for this story. Michael (a fan it seems) saw Prince, made eye contact and (apparently) Prince immediately and abruptly looked away moments before sicing his boys loose instructing Mike to avert his fucking eyesight. Seems just a TAD excessive, funny, strange and odd - and I don't see any reason to make this story up.

So, it's a little weird and control freaky to me. And stories like these don't entirely exist in a vacuum or as some sort of outlier, specifically during this time when the name change thing was in full effect and the ego had run completely amok. Other celebs have described similar things.

I'm not even famous and I too have some social anxiety issues. Know what I do when they're overwhelming me? I leave the party and go somewhere I feel secure, surrounded by friends.

I'm honestly not even really trying to shit on Prince over it. I'm really not. His diva bullshit and occasional arrogance is actually part of the lore for me - even oddly endearing somtimes - and I find the whole story completely hilarious.

You are just repeating what you said already. People like that Prince was weird. He did what they expected and he did have social anxiety. his clothes and height don't mean he needs to hide or that he does not have a right to feel uncomfortable. He didn't always go to clubs to get attention. Often he was there to see how others were dancing and look at trends or take his girl out etc.

His tactics sucked but perhaps a benefit of the doubt would be nice.. Those hating on him in the comment section under MI's interview --is that what Michael wanted?. No one knows what other people are going through. And we weren't there to see what Prince saw or even what Prince said. And who the hell is going to admit that they were staring at someone in a creepy way? Half the time we don't know we are staring until the other person reacts to our stare.
