Every album is a compilation of songs by definition, so what's the difference between HNR albums and other albums like AOA?
He picked these songs and put them together in a project. It's a studio album for me.

Of course. There's no difference whatsoever between Plec, AOA, HnR1 and HnR2, particularly if you look at the creative process, recording dates and release schedule for all 4 albums. It's just the usual: people fantasizing things and deciding they're real because they want them to be. I find it more and more exhausting year after year TBH. oops! Sorry! Let me elaborate, please! 'Art Official Age' was the last Prince album -for me- because it had an actual theme. 'Hit 'n' Run : Phase 1' was kind of cohesive because of it's outside production vibe, but still -for me-, a compilation, just like 'The Slaughterhouse' or 'The Chocolate Invation', as is 'Hit 'n' Run : Phase 2'. . 'Lotus Flow3r' = ALBUM 'MPLSOUND' = compilation . List it for yourselves, just for SnG! "Whatever skin we're in

This is complete nonsense. It's pretty much like saying "D&P is an album because it has a blue cover, but I cannot consider TGE an album because the cover is orange" or, as I have actually read once on the Org ( ), "Xpectation and NEWS are not real albums because they're instrumental and there's no such thing as an instrumental album". And Jurassic Park and Lord of the Ring aren't really movies, by the way, because there's CGI in them and only movies with real actors are real movie (while we're at it...). Whatever absurdities go on in your mind is your problem, but there really is no need for you to share them on the Internet. No offense meant, it's just exhausting A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Only one I'd heard much about that he supposedly had in the can was Black is the New Black. I'd like to hear anything new though whether it's that album or more things from the vault.

What's wrong with y'all? How does being released on CD make an album an album? Are you being serious??? And how does your appreciation of albums determine whether they're albums or not? No offense meant but WTF is going on in y'all heads? This, said, TCI and TS were indeed more or less comps of previously released material (albeit featuring alternate versions of several songs and one new song), but for one thing they were comps of non album tracks clearly organized as cohesive ensembles, and for another it's Prince himself who included them in his online discography on NPGMC, so it appears he clearly considered them albums. The fact that most of the material had been made available on limited singles or NPGMC did not disqualify it for inclusion on proper albums. Prince also included The War as the forth NPG album on his NPGMC discography, btw (despite later advertising it as a single on Tidal) A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Point taken. I blame allmusic.com They have Xpectation under 'albums' and TCI and TS under 'compilations'. Interesting that P himself considered them official discography, as they sound uneven compared to stuff like TRC, ONA and NEWS. Dats just me doe. After all, Why No New Power Soul, eh? To be fair these 2 evolved from the High and Peace album projects, and it's even surprising P didn't keep these original titles. Most of the material come from the same sets of sessions and have a very distinctive, similar sound. Also, you sound surprised with the fact that the way Prince perceived these records may not be the same as yours. I for one worship these 2 records and everything else that came from these sessions, so if fans can enjoy them, why on earth would you assume Prince considered the material "uneven"? He had no reason to re-release it past the original Npgmc run, he clearly was fond of the material. Well for me there are 6 keepers. Underneath the Cream, The Dance, Gamillah, U Make my Sunshine, Props 'n' Pounds, The Daisy Chain. If I deem a song 3/5 it's not a keeper. I just find them weak for Prince, that's all. Could be worse. I could be Alex Hahn and hate every. single. one. The broken up releases fits in with the scenario and I'd say it's only by public demand that the material ended up in their own compilations as such. Of course, this doesn't mean anything regarding how Prince felt about the material one way or another. Prince had some very specific ideas around what material went where and it's not like he had a merch or product team guiding his decisions. For him, it could've been much like other scenarios where the material is put out and he's more or less done with it. So in short, sure. They're compilations. HnR 1 and 2 are not compilations. He explained that many times over the years, but also regarding those albums. Sometimes the material just didn't fit until a certain time and all the songs that had been previously released on HnR2 were tweaked for that release.

I think most fans missed it entirely but when the material was first released in 2001, for me it was a true return to form, Prince doing minimalist electrofunk again. I really never understood how people who deeply love Prince's music could be left indifferent by the material because these 2 records are sort of the very essence of what's always made P's music awesome. But hell, different folks different strokes I guess. . Now when it comes to the release schedule and format, it was mostly a matter of timing. When Prince decided to launch NPGMC he needed new material to give the fans on a monthly basis (he could have pillaged the vault, and he did a little, but you know P: it had to be new material), and at the same time he began working on TRC and realized he was unto something, so it was decided to scrap High and Peace in favor of both the NPGMC project and TRC. . 3 years later, Prince did want to release them on CD, and nearly did, on the planned TCI boxset that contained both TCI and TS alongside ONA, The War, C-Note, Xpectation and the Glam Slam Club Mix. http://princevault.com/in...asion-2003 . Then he backed off at the last minute. Officially it was because of a manufacturing issue but I think the project never even went that far, that Prince finally realized that releasing an expensive 7 CD boxset containing almost only previously released material that most of his hardcore fans already had was maybe not the soundest business decision. That, and the fact that Musicology was already in the can, and that P realized it had the potential to be a succesful, radio-friendly comeback album. Even with the boxset gone, P could have released the material separately, but what sense would it have made to release just TCI and TS on CD in 2004, when Prince clearly wanted the world to focus on Musicology? None. And later, well, later was too late, P and the world had moved on, and CD sales didn't exacly explode in the 2010's anyway. . Funnily enough, these records, in their various incarnations, were scrapped twice in favor of other projects. Peace and High were scrapped because Prince needed material for his futuristic online project and at the same time felt TRC was a much smarter public statement to make in the context of 2001 (and it was, Prince making a "soulquarian" record was quite zeitgeist), then TCI and TS were released digitally only probably in part because Prince had his big commercial come-back album in the can. From that perspective it could be argued that he felt the other records were better, but I think it was mostly business decisions really. . This said, Prince made sure the material wasn't entirely lost for the fans (at least for a while, until he shut NPGMC down) and releasing it digitally was kind of the logic thing to do. A decade later, Prince was more than happy to deliver both records (including a previously unreleased config of TCI) to Tidal, so it's not like he forgot the records or anything like that. . A funny thing in support of the "album" case is that, in 2003, Prince could have filled both CDs to the bone with NPGMC material: there was over 30 minutes more available on each CD and a lot of other NPGMC songs from 2001! Tracks like Van Gogh, Instrumental, Jukebox With A Heartbeat, My Medallion, When Will We B Paid, Cybersingle and Hit U In The Socket were literally begging to be included, for example. Other NPGMC tracks such as Funky Design, Mad, Madrid 2 Chicago, Breathe, not to mention the live songs, could have found their way there. But instead, Prince clearly chose to carefully engineer both records as a narrative, cohesive 10 songs ensemble with an old school album length, going as far as to replace My Medallion by The Dance at the last minute and resequence the whole record accordingly. If the songs had not been made available on NPGMC in 2001, and if they'd been released as such for the first time instead, it wouldn't have crossed anyone's mind to call them compilations. Prince clearly curated both records with the intention to turn them into real albums. In that sense, I believe they deserve the album status as much as any other record he made.
