The Prince song that is great now but was horrible? What's the first Prince song that comes to mind that when you first heard it,you thought he had lost "IT" and the song was terrible but now days you dig it? For me,it was "Rocknroll Love Affair".I think I heard the Jimmy Kimmel performance first before the studio version.I couldnt believe my ears it was that bad at the time. But now as I am older,I really like the song. They say your tastes change as you get older.I know Doritos don't even taste good to me now days so I guess it's true. I know most of you will say "Purple and Gold" but let's disregard that because I believe Prince was trolling us with that one

Funny you should mention Rock And Roll . . . but probably the first song I didn't care for much from Prince was Rock N' Roll Is Alive (And It Lives In Minneapolis).

It was not. | |

One thing is to not be impressed and another is to regard it as horrible.

I wouldn't say they're "horrible", but I am very very tired of "Little Red Corvette" and "Kiss". I don't hate them, I just don't go looking for them. . Now, a big single that I never ever liked was "Thieves In The Temple". It works for some. But not me. I have tried many, many times to give it an umpteenth chance, but nothing about it clicks in my head.

for years i hated "Thieves In The Temple"... now i love to hear it in the vehicle ... thats one that HAS to be played at HIGH volumes, and listened to alone, to be fully appreciated

there may have been funkier, more melodic, or more creative songs than "U Got The Look"... but that song is the perfect example of what a HIT SONG should sound like...just like "Little Red Corvette" and "Raspberry Beret" before it...

I still don't understand why people drown in cummies over Cosmic Day, but I do like the second half of the song a lot.

But 100% agree about " Thieves" never liked it. They were building it up as the next " When Doves Cry" BOB4theFUNK

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Some people can't listen to it because of the stupid lawsuit. Prince's Friend said Takin' Me To Paradise sounds more like Cutting Crew's "I Just Died In Your Arms" in terms of key and chorus melody, and I agree with him. The Italian songwriters just placed "coincidental [barely any] resemblence" over "direct melody stealing", I'm guessing they always do that.

I hated 'Take Me With You' in 1984 as for me it was by far the weakest song in an almost perfect album and seemed like a song he'd give as a throwaway to Vanity 6. The duet vocals are weak and grating. In later years, I began to enjoy the live versions probably because Appollonia wasn't singing the lines! The intro drums and strings as well as the chord changes in the bridge are pretty cool too.
Btw, I hate 'Cream' and don't understand why it was and still is popular. [Edited 9/21/20 5:10am]

hmmm Not sure which Prince songs I would consider "growers". I think I either love it or put it in the "he's done this 1000x list (e.g "generic R&B ballad that will never be as good as Adore #103" or "WTF was he thinking (e.g. "Life of the Party").
One song sort has grown on be recently would be "U Know". Not a fan of most of his later efforts to sound current (he played the "old man at the club" thing for too long") but I do kinda dig that one now.
