Yes, I mean, I've never really judged Prince's music outside of some 1990s stuff, as commercial

I rarely even mix Prince music in to other genre playlists

My Prince playlists usually only include Prince and the proteges or songs he made for someone

I like the big hits but...

Purple rain is overrated. Prince did these big ballads better with other songs. The lyrics dont add up to much on PR. Its just about the chorus and the chords. Plus the production has always sounded a bit iffy to me. Other 80s power ballads were better produced.

1999 I love the intro, the funky second part, the lyrics, but that massive synth fanfare gets on my nerves.

Kiss. Obv a perfect pop record, I love it, but live, it doesn't often sound quite right?

Sexy mf. Just a bad song. Embarrassing lyrics. Derivative jb riff. A very silly song. Controversial yes but in the most juvenile way.

7. This is just leaden.

No Hits make it in my personal Top20 but a few bubble right below (Sign, Kiss, Doves).

Prince’s catalog is so massive and diverse, it is not suprising that many ppl would be moved outside the Hits. I would say that P was so ahead of the game that his Hits are still “cutting edge.”

Love your list, as always!

Me too! I'd expected it to be more 'old skool', though! And am surprised to see Teacher, Teacher on
there, tbh, but that's just one of my 'not-so-crazy-about'-songs...

Thank you both! The attraction of "Teacher, Teacher" for me is the sitar over the four-on-the-floor beat. Add Wendy & Lisa's vocals on top and it was an easy addition to my top 20. I don't care for the 1982 version that much in comparison.

I think with a lot of people you get in to an artist through their most well known works, and if you become a fan you do so from delving deeper beyond that. It's not that you don't recognise the brilliance of say When Doves Cry or 1999, there's nothing to prove, you just have hundreds of songs to choose your favourites from rather than a 15 track best of like a casual fan might have.

Yeah, that's basically the point I was trying to make. It's not that I don't recognize the brilliance of his commerical hits, it's just that there are so many songs to choose from that statistically I'm not likely to have them fill my favorites list. Plus, I simply made myself sick of many of them by listening to them too much.

Great topic - Seldom poster though always following here, maybe a third of P’s Pop collection reside in my top 20 - I still enjoy many more that the mainstream folks don’t recognize-
