Prince Estate - Idea for Release

Like Springsteen has done with his 1975-1985 Live Set...I would suggest something just like that be compiled. It would be easy as he has most of his shows recorded but this way could highlight his greatest performances.

As an example, instead of releasing the entire Small Club show, just include the incredible 'Just My Imagination'. From Club Vega, give us that fiery 'Bambi'. How about 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' from the ATlanta show where he opened for Rick James. It's endless what you could compile...

Maybe do a 1978-1988...followed by a 1989-1999 etc. OR, do it by band...there was always a distinct sound from each line up. Go into rehearsals...I Would Die 4 U from 1981 where they do it so rock like.

to take it a step further, it would be amazing if the estate created a website like https://live.brucespringsteen.net . Given the amount of live performances, after shows, soundchecks, etc that Prince has recorded, it would make more sense to set up something like this for fans rather than one off live releases.

if they want to release songs from a show, release the whole show... i don't like the idea of piecemealing things across multiple release, the "originals" concept is bad enough in that regard.

There's real obvious releases. All DVDs (since these were only shot in SD much like the Purple Rain concert)

Lovesexy Live '88 (only been on videotape and laserdisc has been the highest format)

Nude Tour (with all the TV shows and MTV bits that showed portions, there is obviously a master video tape edited multicam of the Japanese one)

The Parade Birthday show appears to have been shot on film, corrrect (because of the color and contrast values on the lowfi version we have)? That one could be in HD or blu-ray.

Sorry, but I don't like this idea.
I'd prefer releases that contain a complete show of a tour plus a sampler with songs that he didn't play frequently on that tour (for example Parade Tour: Miss You, Do U Lie...)
Plus an Aftershow of that tour.
And if it furthermore contained a rehearsal and a soundcheck of that tour it would be it a box set that would make everyone of us happy, I guess.

Full shows! Was just listening to the 08/03/83 show this morning. Shame that has not been released, especially with Purple Rain Deluxe.

It would have to have a really knowledgeable curator, and right now the collections seem a bit scattered in approach. I also think the cataloguing of live material will take a lot longer to sort out.

If you want to experience this idea in the meantime you can hunt down the Days of Soundboard releases. The first few editions were (I think) precisely that.

The live BRUCE SPRINGSTEIN idea is PERFECT.

Could you imagine being able to download/copy-to-order FULL SOUNDBOARD shows from the 1978 "Capri" shows all through the P&M shows of 2016??

Soundchecks thrown in too for good measure?

It would set the standard for legacy artists.

And PRINCE HAS THE RECEIPTS of ALL THE SHOWS.

Full shows only. Compilations of live tracks sound out of context and do not capture the full.mood of a gig and with prince running songs into each other, the edits would be brutal.

Was there some sort of a teaser on Twitter a few months ago on the Piano And Microphone shows at Paisley Park?

I hope they won't ever do something like this and butcher complete (concert) experiences like this.

Just a snippet as a comment to something.
It's sad the Estate won't release the full thing because every fan would want that asap and rumour has it that soundboards of all the Piano & Mic shows are among some traders as of a few weeks.
If these traders sell it to a boot company the Estate loses out with a cool exclusive release.

Full shows only please.

Prince theoretically recorded all of his shows. At the very least, there should be soundboard audio of every concert, if not also soundchecks and aftershows. If there is corresponding video, even better!

Using Pearl Jam's bootleg series as a model, they could release everything in minimal packaging (or just straight digital) and keep the cost low (say $10) for each just to encourage buying multiple cities of the same tour.

I'm sure all of this is tied up in legal red tape right now, and also they might be holding off on any standalone live albums to make way for Piano & Microphone 2016.

I totally get why some are saying that only full shows should be released. His shows were so amazingly choreographed that it makes total sense to take in an entire show from start to finish to realize his vision. Lovesexy, Parade, SoTT tours would benefit....however, it is also my reasoning for why we need excerpts from various shows. His shows were so choreographed that the set lists did not change greatdly from night to night. He'd have parts of shows where the band let loose (after Head during the Lovesexy tour as an example). Some of the songs he strung together throughout the years deserve to be heard on their own...like they did with that Lady Cab Driver/I Wanna Be your/Head/Little Red medley on the 1999 set. There are so many transtions he did that were just superb....i'll never forget in 1993 being frozen when the opening chords to She's Always In MY Hair started after "let's go'. No one had heard that live up to that point and it just blew us away. Then it went into Irresistable.... from Act1, that entire Encore is like dynamite.

From Lovesexy/SOTT that Purple Rain set (Lets Go/When Doves/Purple Rain/1999) is amazing in how it all falls together.

If you get into the aftershows, wow...so many treasures.

Just My Imagination....Small Club AND Camden Palace

Bambi - Club Vega

I think they will have to start releasing at least 2 projects a year.
The old fans are ageing.
They cant take 10 years to release one classic album a year.
Thatcwould take forever.
The appetite is here now.

You're absolutely right! Release a classic album and then later in the year release a "new" album that no one has ever heard of. I miss the days of getting a 1-2 disc Prince set. The SDE sets are gorgeous, but a new standalone album will be welcome!

My fear is that maybe the amount of "new" stuff has been exaggerated. I know we've heard of Black Is The New Black and P&M 2016, maybe even HNR Phase 3 and another 3EG album already in the can. Aside from some scattered album outtakes, are there more whole albums from the 2000s?

Prince himself said there are unreleased Time and Revolution albums, but those are dipping into that same era that the Estate has been criticized for using too much.
