She's a kid. Let her wear her shirt. It's not that big of a deal.

Having Dad breathe down her neck saying she has to listen to an album is hella (do the kids still say hella?) uncool. razz

[Edited 8/17/20 14:05pm]

Not worried about my kid thinking I'm cool or not (that doesn't usually result in good parenting) but I feel that if you're wearing a Prince t-shirt you should know something about Prince. Otherwise, you're just a poser.

But by her wearing the Prince shirt, she is showing her interest in Prince. She knows who Prince is, and I'm sure has heard Prince songs. Why would she have to listen to the full album?

Do you think that all those folks that wear a Che Guevara t-shirt are experts in Argentinian Marxist politics?

The first thing I thought of was Che Guevara... lol

AvocadosMax

A lot of kids today, even people my age (22) wear shirts of things they don't even get into, they just think it looks cool

I wouldn't stress it too much. One day when she feels like listening to the album, she will. I'm sure she'll have a lot of people going "hey whats your favorite song off that record" and she'll be sick of resorting to the title track or just flat-out saying "actually i haven't heard the entire thing, just Purple Rain"

It may be cringey to see people wear shirts with pictures of your heroes on them when they don't hold the same reverence, but it also hits different when your parents project their drama onto a kid. It's the kind of thing kids remember - not that they remember to research things before wearing the thing's related merch, but that they remember you giving them shit for an entirely inconsequential issue that reveals itself to be more your own problem than a problem she created.

I'd also like to know on what ground is a parent entitled to forbid an 18 year old girl from going out. Does the wife get sequestrated, too, when she doesn't behave?

That part was said in jest. She was well aware that I was joking when I said that.

Then you should have told us. It's very possible that you made your post sound way more dramatic and authoritarian than what actually occured wink

I guarantee Joy Division sold more t-shirts than they did albums. I've met exactly one millennial who likes that band but I see the t-shirt everywhere. But the art/design is itself a cultural product and who says you can't like/wear the image without knowing the music?

Purple Rain I don't quite get because the cover doesn't appeal to me all that much, but maybe your daughter likes the colors or the retro look or - get this - maybe she's proud of her parent and wants to connect and it's a method for communicating that.

I'd drop the album in their room and let them listen to it on their own time. She'll get around to it when she figures out how to listen to music without the Spotify algorithm's help.

I've been a fan of New Order since high school. I love New Order!

I'm 48 now, and my wife and I tried getting into Joy Division again. I tried back then, and I just tried last week. I just can't.

Like you said, the graphic on the album cover is everywhere, but I doubt most people could name one song other than Love Will Tear Us Apart Again.

She's Lost Control is another classic. I'd also suggest the more recent remastering if you're on a streaming site, I think they made an effort to make it more listenable, or more like New Order, if the voice puts you off. Especially Unknown Pleasures.

It was strange to see that logo become an Urban Outfitter staple item. I had the opposite feeling when I saw Purple Rain shirt though, it just made me proud.

My 18-year-old daughter came home from the mall recently with a brand spanking new Puple Rain t-shirt. The only problem is that she does not listen to Prince. She was hesitant to show me the shirt because she knew I would have a problem with it, which I did. I told her that I don't think she should wear the shirt without listening to the FULL album and not just the title track that I forced her to listen to. I told her that I would not let her out of the house if she is wearting the shirt without first listening to the full album. Am I being unreasonable and overbearing? I feel that I am bothered by this more than I should be. Anyone else bothered by stuff like this or is just me?

It's just you lol I'm sorry, but are you really one of those people I see on FB from time to time who shame teenagers or people in their early 20's who wear shirts from bands and artists they don't really know about? It's just a shirt.....chill.

To give you my perspective: personally I would have been honoured and pleased to see my daughter come home in a Prince t-shirt, even if she never listened to the PR album. I would see it as a victory, a first step towards acknowledging Prince as a great artist.

I am a bit afraid your daughter might have (partially) bought the t-shirt to please you and to connect with you. Seen in that light I hope you said these words to her in jest and not in annoyance. If so, I think she might have felt a little hurt and rejected. You should probably talk to her and apologise for being a bit edgy with her earlier and tell her you actually love to see her in a Prince t-shirt.

So yeah, in general I would say you were probably more bothered with this than you should have been really. But I do think it is great (and quite courageous) that you came back to this thread later to say that the reactions here gave you a new perspective.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
