I'd choose The Beautiful Experience. It brings back happy memories for me. The live footage is great, but it would have been nice to have gotten the entire gig. Maybe one day.

"The Beautiful Experience"...Very different vibe, sound and look..challenging and slightly cutting edge...almost like the "Prince" of the 1980's never existed....but TBH, I was more of a fan of the "Love 4 One Another" film.

the BEAUTIFUL experience by far. All the new songs, the live performances, the technology aspects. Every bit of it is fantastic.

I've only seen The Beautiful Experience once and don't remember much of it.

They're all pretty awful in their own unique ways, but I prefer The Beautiful Experience.

The correct answer is Love 4 One Another, especially since it was the first time I'd heard Days of Wild, The Good Life, Count the Days and The Ride plus Nona Gaye covering her father's own Inner City Blues.

When I lived in Minneapolis, I worked at Calhoun Square at City Looks Salon. They had a candle shop in the mall, and I found that blue dolphin candle shown in Love 4 One Another. I had it for years.

Side note unrelated to Prince: There was some guy, in his 40s, that rode the escalators all day. They were in the middle of Calhoun Square, so you could almost see them from any storefront (more or less). When I started, I asked the girl at the salon desk, "What's up w/ that guy?" The story was he used to be a professor and had some sort of mental break. I don't know if that was true, but he was certainly in his own world. He would go up one escalator to the 2nd floor, turn around and ride the other back down again. He sorta talked to himself or thought out loud. He never bothered anyone, and almost avoided interaction. He was aware of people but stayed to himself. But yeah, he was escalator guy, up n' down all day long.

Calhoun Square is just a corner mall. Not a typical big mall like you'd think about today. There's a BBQ joint or something in there that also has live music. Smaller eateries, a Starbucks, the candle shop, salon. It's probably the size of a Sam's or Costco, roughly. Maybe smaller, maybe bigger. No real way to expand it unless they knock down the rest of the block. Interestingly enough, there used to be a Taco Bell on the back of it on West Lake, across from where the NPG Store used to be located. The last time I looked at Google Earth, I think they tore it down for some reason. I remember purple and red haired kids in their oversized widelegged jeans, begging for $1 to get a burrito. My bus arrived, so I kept my mouth shut and went home. hahaha

I meant I never knew it was a real place. Thought it was one of those mythical Prince locations/song titles/lyrics that had meaning for him like Uptown, Paisely Park (b4 he built it), Menda City and such.

Just to add, it's no longer called Calhoun Square. New owners and they jumped on the bandwagon of getting rid of the name Calhoun (John Calhoun), since he owned slaves. Lake Calhoun was also changed to Bde Maka Ska.

Well, we all know now that Uptown is a real place. Calhoun Square is smack dab in the middle of it. It's a section of Minneapolis near the Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles (mentioned in "Rock n' Roll Is Alive"). I dig that Prince pulled so much from his home town, beyond just namechecking it or saying "twin cities" somewhere in his music. Hell, he when he named Galpin in "Zanalee," that was pretty homebased, if you ask me.

I also love that if you put in "Uptown Minneapolis" in Google Earth and it takes you to the corner of Hennepin and Lake Street. That's the hub of the Uptown district.

It was fun living near there. I lived a bit away from Uptown proper, on Blaisdell between W. 26 and W. 27th. I was just off E. Lake, not W. Lake where Calhoun is and the NPG Store was located. I used to walk down to Lake Calhoun and just watch all the beautiful men walk or jog by on their path to health or whatever the fuck it was they were doing. lol

Definitely The Beautiful Experience. After the somewhat 'family friendly' Batman-GB-DP- years, P sounded exciting, subversive, and weird again.

Well, we all know now that Uptown is a real place.

Well, yeah, but as it's presented on Dirty Mind, I always took it as more of an esoteric, symbolic utopia that Prince was building in his mind and communicating to us via make believe places rather than a real physical space he/we could actually hop on a bus and go visit. More of a state of mind than a real physical construct.

But maybe I've been reading some of his songwriting the wrong way, starting with Calhoun Square I guess.

I grew up in Philly listening to Prince in the 80's and have only been to Minneapolis once in 2010 so I always took most of his geographical references as more of an overall mindset than the stuff that, say, someone like Springsteen was literally writing about with stuff like Asbury Park. Again, it seems I was wrong so thanks for the education.

I was in Philly in the late 80s at PNSY in the Navy. We used to go to a restaurant on Walnut called AJ Winstons, then walk over to a Strawberries to buy tapes or CDs, or head down to South Street to see a band at JC Dobbs, stop in at Zipperhead, then have pizza at LP (where they had a video jukebox and we'd always slug ICNTTPOYM).

This reminds me of how much I liked the idea of pressing a 7" of "Rock N Roll Is Alive (And It Lives In Minneapolis)" b/w "Calhoun Square" for the locals a few years ago. I'd love to own that single.
