This may come off as degrading to some female fans, or generalising, which is not the intention of this thread, but I have noticed a difference between male and female fans in why they dig Prince.

I have noticed that quite a few females mainly seem to be attracted to Prince's performance, voice, and appearance. The quality of the songs sometimes doesn't seem to matter all that much. This is often expressed with admirance of his "sexy voice", a voice that almost no other male singer can mimic... and in his "mystique" act and appearance. Romantic or sexually arousing lyrics can play a part too. Sometimes it seems that as long as he is "sexy"and "mystique" he is the greatest.

Now mind you, I am not saying that all female fans think like that, but... yet, for the male fans it seems to be quite a different matter why they dig Prince.

First of all, just the music itself, instead of the music AND the man, seems to play a more important part. A truly funky Prince, or a Prince that truly rocks is often very much appreciated by male fans, just because it is truly funky or truly rocks. Also, the quality of songs seems to be criticsed sooner by males than by females. This may have to do with the fact that males see through the sexy and mystique appearance sooner than some women. Quite naturally, for most males the "sexy" voice isn't a reason for them to like Prince. However, Prince's vocal capbailities are appreciated just the same, just because he is very good at it. It is probably the same with his guitar playing. They may not think he is "sexy" when he plays guitar, but they may think he is "cool" by the way he plays and... when he is in a creative mood, the impressive solo's he can perform.

So...I wonder, is it me, or has somebody else noticed these differences as well? How can we assess what the true differences between male and female fans are when surely not all male and female fans are the same, but at the same time there seems to be a clear difference?

"but the little girls understand"

Alright... WHO SAID THAT???!!!

Nobody in particular..it's a common phrase some critics used to use as a joke on an artist to describe how a superficial artists had teeny bopper female fans that "really really understands" said artists..like a boyband Nsync type of artist. To explain the whole music fanatic girls screaming at concerts and crying experience in general. However in reviewing Prince Dirty Mind show and record, Rolling Stone used the caption, "But will the little girls understand?"

The freaky (freaks in training) ones did

Do you think prince still has "teeny bopper female fans"?...lol.

No..and for the most part I dont think he ever had that teeny bopper fanbase after DM..except with Rains fallout and then they all left the next year though. I only throughout the little girls understanding thing as a reference point etc.

Well, i've always dug him for his music...that's really the only reason why I'm still a fan now.
Now don't get me wrong, he is good-looking (at times), but that's not what makes me a fan of anybody.
In fact I've always liked him first and foremost for the music. Even when I was at that teeny bopper age, :shug:, guess I was an old soul.

As much as I drool over the man now I have to admit I didn't really start trippin off him until late in the game (the Violet the Organ Grinder video turned me the fuck OUT). I was always aware that he was cute, but I didn't actually see him until I was already interested in the music. I heard Soft & Wet & IWBYL on the radio as a 7 year old. I don't know when I finally laid eyes on the man via videos or album covers (I'm guessing around Controversy time), but I was already digging his sound.

Like someone said above, his good looks are just a nice, NICE, NIIICE bonus on top of an incredible talent. If it were only looks that mattered, people would still be trippin off the likes of Christopher Williams & shit (decent voice, weak songs, gotta go). Don't boil down to simply looks. That would imply that female fans can't think past the throbs in our panties & Lord knows we do that all the time, lol...

i think women are still less superficial in what they admire about male performers. and the way men judge female performers, 99.9% of the time the first mention is how she looks. very few guys seem to appreciate women with talent and so-so looks, let alone find them sexy.

Alright, so you too like him first and foremost because of the music, BUT... also because of his "good looks". Altho' in second place, it does seem to play an important part in why you "drool" over him so much. Good point, 99.9 % is perhabs a bit much, but basically you are probably right. However, when we look at the teeny bopper female fans and also quite a few female prince fans who are no longer teenagers, we also see a lot of admirance for looks, sexy voice, dance, mystique appearance etc, etc... Then it gets kind of funny when females complain about how men admire looks first and foremost in female singers, but at the same time they are guilty of it too... and perhabs even more, because most men usually are clear about liking a woman for her looks, while women often will try their best not to make it seem like it is mainly about looks.

"The whole package" including his ass... good lord...lol.

question: You will probably never have his ass (nor the rest of the package), so why do you mention it as part of what appeals you? (Since this is basically the same as a man saying he likes a female singer because she has a nice ass, or breats or whatever.)

I dig the music first and foremost, but his "Purple Rain" image looked fucking cool to me and added to my appreciation of him at that time. Of course I was only a 12 year old boy at that time. Later his outrageous clothes and stuff started to bother me. I mean, it was cool in the eighties and all, but times have changed and so did I. I have always had the feeling that his image and weirdness didn't do him much good commercially in the nineties...

Well... in the 90's he was usually following the trends. First he became 'hiphop'... later he became he 'r&b'... and all along he wasn't wearing so much weird stuff anymore, like panties and raincoats. I think Prince did himself bad by being such a follower those days and that turned away the attention of many fans that liked him for his radically being his own 'weird', 'cool', self, in his music and eccentric clothing and such.

I would have thought that you are not the woman to fall for Prince the "sexobject". Still... you do give importance to his personality. Which leads me to wonder how you can find a man interesting or adorable when you don't really personally know him. Is it because his lyrics perhabs show how he truly is?

Also, you mention his passion for his art and him not being afraid to be himself, and not afraid to let us "see" who he is. I wonder if the latter is really true...

--
[This message was edited Fri Apr 25 7:42:16 PDT 2003 by huggy]

I see his personality in his expressions. He is not faking when he shows
sooo much emotion when performing his art..
He is not faking when he gets into the music of
other artists as he did at the celly.
Plus I have heard so much positivity in his music; so much spirituality...always.
Now I have never "heard" all of his music.
If the title says it's too hot...I don't listen.
I have "the ladder" from long ago to tell me he is a man of substance.
I have "and God Created Woman"..."The Greatest Romance" which shows his
love and appreciation for women involve much more than just lust.
I watch and I listen and I feel. nod

Interesting answer. I notice that you do fall for his act and performance, which is "not fake" according to you. But do most other artists fake it then? ...

And I think the lyrics of "the Greatest romance" seems to imply some sexuality ... Perhabs it would be inetresting for you to hear how his songwriting in this respect changed during the 80's and later during the 90's. For example the song "Temptation" already deals with his beliefs that he is a sinner for having such a "libido". God plays a part in it as well...or so it seems...
[This message was edited Fri Apr 25 16:42:12 PDT 2003 by huggy]

I hope you did not think that I am void of sexuality.
When God created woman...there was a reason she was made differently from Adam. nod
And I agree, his music, as far as I can see, has a long history of spirituality.
So...how's everybody doing? smile
