Prince couldn't sing like that at the time. Moreover in his memoirs he wrote that he could only sing in falsetto because he had a terrible deep voice at the time.

I have my doubts to, this sounds more like his voice like on 'You're My Love'. I wonder if the original engineer has a tape copy of the '79 version and The Estate did a comparison to determine if this is the same.

My guess....instrumental section = 79 ....some vocal sections from 1982!

Seriously, guys, you should know by now that "ears" are not a method to establish scientific knowledge... . This said, the estate has managed to accomplish so many fuck-ups in the course of the last 4 years that I wouldn't be surprised if they made a mistake. What makes me assume that the date they give is genuine is that 1/ Princevault already features an exact recording date. I'm not sure but I don't believe such date has been provided by M. Howe, has it? My guess is that Duane gave them the date, and that if Duane considers the info provided by the estate valid, it probably is. . Another clue is that the engineer credited on the YT stream is Bob Mockler. Mockler is one of the engeneers who worked on "Prince", he is even specifically credited for "remix" while Gary Brandt and Mark Ettel are credited for engeneering. Again, this could be an error, but the credit given to this very specifically targeted engineer (i.e. one who worked at the very end of the Prince sessions, as opposed to one of the leading engineers for this album) seems consistant with the given recording date. . Therefore, while never excluding the possibility of an error, I'll consider the information true unless proven false, which it may be at some point, but I see no reason to believe the vocals make this impossible for 1979. The quote from the memoir is in fact not from the memoir at all but quoted IN the memoir FROM a 1979 interview in the Minneapolis Star (this is exactly what I'm talking about when I talk about methods to establish scientific knowledge: how can we work seriously if we don't even know who said what and in which context and if we confuse sources??!). In those early interview, Prince was known as a notorious bullshiter, telling journalists whatever crossed his mind for the sake of shock value or confusing the audience. Thus, I wouldn't believe a single word he said at the time. It's pretty unlikely to assume Prince was incapable of singing this way by 1979, when he already had years of experience. Singing with one's natural voice is usually the easiest way to go anyway (I took 5 years of singing classes in my 20's, so while I do not consider myself an authority on the subject, I know my 2 bits). I love this version. I like the raw sound, vocals, and guitar tone. This is more of a rocker than the album version from 1987. Only minor issue is I'm not really a fan of the "I'll sure as hell try" line, at least not yet, because it seems to undermine the theme of the song. But anyway, it's amazing that he had songs as good as this sitting on the shelf for years. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

I would have loved to see a video of this released in 87.

i dont think this should be on the SOTT SDE. it should be on the prince/dirty mind re-releases as its from that period, not the late 80s. odd to release it on here. but whatever!

This doesn't sound anything like that vocal take to me. He is very clearly rusty in this take. Even the squeaky squeal is not the kind of sound he'd make in 81-82.
