Note that the promo text does not mention a 1982 home recording and says "The track was retrieved from the vault in June 1986 and re-recorded". Theory: this 1979 version has been mistakenly dated to 1982 based on the sound.

Definitely has a "Cars/New Wave" feel to it. This could have been on "D.M"...I dig it..I also like the out of phase Fender (or Hohner) raw guitar sound too.

When Prince write and recorded this, in May of 1979, he was under a lot of pressure for a BIG HIT after the relative soft performance of FOR YOU. Amazing that he put this on the back burner for close to eight years. The song just drips with potential, even as a somewhat raw version. If he would have played this for Warner Bros execs they probably would have insisted it be on PRINCE.

Also it's interesting that he really didn't fiddle with the original lyrics when he rerecorded it??

Easily would of fit on Dirty Mind, imagine having this all those years & not relelasing it.

Really speaks to his confidence, he knew what he was capaable of & didn't need this gem of a song until he did.

Man, this needs to be released to rock format radio (or any radio campiagn) in 2020. It's so 1979 that's it's 2020 current. I love it.

this is incredible. I mean, yeah, the 1987 version is definitive and all, but to think that he just had this song knocking about for 6-7 years... amazing.

I'm suspicious that is really from 1979. The keys sound a bit more 81-82 than 79. Would this then be the earliest significant use of his non-falsetto voice?

Yeah he briefly uses it in Just as Long as We're Together, parts of Party Up but its not until the Controversy album in 1981 ( Ronnie Talke to Russian, Annie Christian and Jack You Off) that we get a full song in normal voice.

If from 79 its likely after Prince since then he was still in Disco mode. Perhaps this was for the "Rebels" project which was a bit more rock/pop

Quite amazing to hear! I think it sounds pretty similar to Do It All Night, but can definitly hear why some still suspect this is from 82, as it also kind of sounds like Do Yourself A Favor.

Unfortunately the Bolas hard-panning and mono reverb strikes again.

He briefly uses it in Soft & Wet, his debut single, but it's a good point. Could the vocals have been recorded later? The drum sound and synths sound pure Dirty Mind to me.

I don't want to take away from your Bolas detracting, because sometimes he definitely deserves it, but I looked at the Tidal credits and his name wasn't on there, only Bernie's and the original engineer from 79'.

You're right though, the hard panning is obnoxious.

Much like how the sound on Don't Let Him Fool Ya sounds exactly like Dirty Mind sessions to me, I think that that stripped down sound is just kinda how Prince sounds when he demos something in a rock genre. See also a bunch of the other demos on 1999 SDE like Can't Stop, Vagina, etc.

Nice little tidbit to see that the first line was gonna be "She was only fifteen when her old man ran away" before Prince crossed it out. I imagine he changed it pretty quickly.

I'd never "looked" at the lyrics before, but it's interesting that, written down, the refrain is basically prose, which is unusual in a pop song.
