Newpower Soul SE thought experiment

For kicks: You've been charged with compiling tracks for an upcoming Special Edition of Newpower Soul. How do you fill those extra discs?

Bear in mind that if you complain about Newpower Soul, you will fail and lose your commission.

There's the 'Come On' remix, at least. Could 'The War' go there?

Hard pressed to find a live set I'm dying to hear -- but at least one of the summer '98 shows was filmed for television, at Café de Paris in London.

7 versions of Come On: Radio Edit, Remix, Latenitemix, Doug E. Fresh Mix, Album Edit, Hypermix, Acapella. 3 versions of The One: Edit, Remix, Remix Edit. The War is within the time frame. The Beautiful Strange VHS. That's probably about it for released material.

I guess they could bring back the New Power Pack concept and include GCS2000 & Come To My House, but I would not expect them to.

S&M Groove and Funk Radio are from this era, there were samples of them on whatever revolving door official website was around at the time.

The Good Life (Big City remix) was originally supposed to be on NPS (one print run of the CD numbers the tracks incorrectly on the back cover as a result of its removal, and the track numbers subsequently not being adjusted), between Shoo-Bed-Ooh and Push It Up.

Opinions may will vary, but, I would save S&M Groove for a NPGMC compilation and a reissue of Slaughterhouse and leave The Good Life Big City Remix for an Exodus set. Funk Radio would be a perfect addition, though.

You all can run from the truth all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that NPS is a slam dunk winner of an album and Come On is one of the best songs of P's career.

"Funk Radio" and so should "Do U Wanna Get Funky" should be included.

PrinceVault says the song was recorded in 1999, but it was heard as an interlude on the "GCS2000" album. "U're Still The One" should also be included.

other than Freaks On This Side, this album is pretty uneventful...not as as bad as Chaos & Disorder or Planet Earth, but it pretty much doubles as a coaster or a weedplate

Absolutely agree, love this album, damn the haters!

Worth the price of admission alone for Come On and Wasted Kisses!

Weirdly, I just posted this over at SHF, in relation to something else. Big fan of Newpower Soul here. Can't wait for it to be issued on vinyl! (Please, Sony?)

"Lastly, I'm always surprised by the dredging Newpower Soul gets... I've always loved it... it's maybe a little derivative, and perhaps without any compositions that could be called absolute classics - which is why it always felt right that it was classed as a side project, which would allow it to be fun... and NPG was just the nearest side project name to hand.

And FUN is what it is.... I think this record is an absolute blast. I love the blend of organic with electronic instruments, the horn charts on the title track and Mad Sex are fantastic, Push It Up and (particularly) Freaks On This Side are brilliant deep funk jams, The One is a beautifully soulful ballad, When U Love Somebody starts out like it's going to be cheesy, but just has so much going on musically, the arrangements across this album are so good....

I just think it got brushed off and no-one ever really bothers to actually LISTEN to it any more.... the worst thing about it is the cover, for me, which is a bit cringe-inducing, otherwise I think it's great."

NPS was 1998, so that was the beginnings of his compressed, acrylic phase of production. And yes, I'm a huge fan of his mid 90s stuff. I've always said it stand well against the mid-80s, too. Gold, Exodus (the funkiest album he's ever produced), Chaos, Come, prince, all great shit. But with Emancipation, production started to flatten a bit.

Technically, his mid 90s material is anything released between the beginning of the 5th month of '93 and the end of the 8th month of '96. So NPS doesn't qualify.

But on top of that, the term mid-(decade) is just plain annoying There's enough bother dividing decades into early/late, so don't complicate things, ok?

Have a nice day anyway.

I am still upset that version of S&M Groove was not on Slaughterhouse. I want that weird sounding
pin ball production version that we got a snippet of all the way back when.

Exactly. Nowhere does it say that. The thread is actually about what would/could be on a special edition of that record, not a "how much do you just love and fawn over this plastic-ass album?!"

Why is everyone trying to tell people how or when to talk? This ain't North Korea, or the pumpkin White House. Folks are free to express their opinions. The album is substandard in more ways than not. Not sure why he started to lean this direction in sound, but songs from HnT2 or 3121 or Planet Earth could easily fit with songs from NPS. The 80s had a couple of sounds, the 90s had their progression of sounds on Prince albums, but the aughts onward is just 50/50 for me. The High album stuff - some is decent, some is absolutely forgettable. NewPowerSoul just sorta grays into a lot of that. Nothing stands out or is "Wow!" I can't remember the last time I listened to it or remembered that it exists.

I do appreciate that there is a trilogy of New Power Generation albums, though.

NewPowerSoul is better than Goldnigga, but a far and very-distant-almost-out-of-view second to Exodus.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Interesting that you mentioned the word 'acrylic' sounding...

I see what you mean, and I'd agree that that kind of sound started with Emancipation...

But I'd counter that on Newpower Soul it's actually tempered with a lot of organic instrumentation as well. And for me, I think it's the mastering of the album which affects/damages its sound, mostly.

I actually think of it as being quite spacious... and like I mentioned, the horn charts throughout the album are fantastic... I love the blend of electronic / organic instrumentation all through this record.

Listening to it now, I'm surprised by how well the sound stands up... Much as I love Emancipation, Newpower Soul actually has dated better, I think.

It's a minor album in his catalogue, I'm not going to pretend his best songwriting is on here, but when you actually get down to the musicianship that's going on, and the arrangements and performances, I actually have a lot of time for it, and thinks there's lots of special stuff happening.

Not sure where I got it! Somewhere on the web a while back...

The vocal doesn't come in til nearly a minute in, and there's some different sound effects in the first minute... but then it seems to be almost the same as the album version.

It's probably just a fan-made edit, to be honest. Nothing wildly different from the original.

My thoughts also. I become a fan in 91 and loved EVERYTHING up to Emancipation. The new band/sound signalled the end of my golden era.

.

As for NPS - it's been said many times Come On, The One and Wasted Kisses are probably the pick of the bunch. I also really like both The One and Come On remix's.

.

The 'live' chanting parts in the likes of Freaks On This Side and (I Like) Funky Music and him singing about his balls being round and round on When U Love Somebody were not my cup of tea.
