Leroy Bennett "there is a full Sign o'The Times show in the vault"

Prince's former lighting designer said this on an on-line Housequake.com interview. Too bad, it's not on the deluxe. Hopefully it comes out soon.
This is what prince fans want a full true live concert from that tour.

I sometimes wonder if they think releasing a proper tour show might diminish peoples' appreciation of the movie, due to its somewhat fraudulent nature.

That aspect's never bothered me, really. I was a performer for years and I know that your performance during dress rehearsal is just as balls-to-the-wall as it would be opening night. The SOTT film is kinda like that in reverse.

I find this part interesting:" There is a full live film in the vault. I haven’t seen it yet but it’s supposed to look amazing. We reshot because Prince didn’t feel the story he was trying to tell was captured properly. Hopefully the real live show will be released."

-

He talks about it a couple of times during the interview.

But we knew that, didn't we? They filmed a few shows on the European tour, the decided the footage was too dark to use for the movie.

Yeah and I thought Howe confirmed they wanted to release these but the rights to the footage are tied up with the rights to the movie.

Yet there is still a bit of that footage in the movie. In fact, part of ICNTTPOYM uses it, of course. And part of it is unsynced with the music. When you see him on the risers, he takes a cross step to the side then starts his solo. You see it in a far away shot, then there's a closeup shot of the exact same move. The first time I saw it, it's obvious as Miko clapping off beat then on beat at the beginning of the same song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

If you take the whole interview in context, I think he is talking about the Belgium/Netherlands footage filmed for the SOTT film.

He seems to sugggest that a lot of the re-shoots at PP were because of the story narrative, rather than the quality of the tour stock.

That seems to be what actually happened, listening to interviews about the movie that came out in the recent year. (including that new blu-ray with interviews)

.

So the original stories were a bit overblown (although there's a grain (no pun intended) of truth in them, if you see the original shots in the movie). The original idea, to me, was much more powerful, an actual live show. (although the close ups would have been from Belgium, as they did not have enough camera's/lenses for every shot needed)

.

But yeah, the rights are apparently a clusterfuck, spread over different regions. And those rights include the original film material. (although, maybe just the audio portion...)

WTH does that mean?

It's a movie, not a concert film.

You think that the band pulled a Milli Vanilli?

No, I think Prince killed a great idea about his, arguably, greatest tour ever and instead gave us a frustrating glimpse at what could have been but isn't. It's killing the great in an attempt to be greater still. (and failing)

.

As to Milli Vanilli, I don't care about lip synching. I just am not interested in watching it.

Agreed, that is a great show but the footage is too dark for an official release imo.

Yep he mentioned this to us also when we talked to him, he said the estate were going to send him the existing footage to check out, so it definitely exists, but whether its release worthy is another thing altogether, and then there are all the rights issues...

That really should have been put on the SE. That NYE concert is nice and all but we've mostly seen it. That Valium show would've been so fun.

"there is a full Sign o'The Times show in the vault"

.

Is that news for an artist that recorded almost everything he did?

I think he's talking about fully produced multicamera shoots instead of 1 camera set up by the soundboard.

If so, why didn't they release that one now, while they need more money because they are wasting so much of that stuff?

.
Call it Sign of the Times Super Deluxe Extra or whatver. 10 Discs: 8 +1 plus this one.

.

How much did they study to get these Estate/record exec/etc jobs?

Right, well these are questions that keep coming up. The Estate seems to be holding back material, if it exists. In this case the theory is it could be caught up in the same rights entanglement as the released film. It's also possible they shot it, but didn't complete it. Either way, the Estate hasn't done much with footage yet.

"Housequake", "Hot Thing", etc., every song looks exactly like what was performed on the tour.

There were some 1987 TV announcements (I remember the Netherlands and Italy, maybe France) where an excerpt of "Play In The Sunshine" was broadcasted, and it was exactly the same, like when Levi and Miko exchange placement briefly with Cat and the Boys. Sadly they were taking down.

I have clear memories of the show, the movie is truly faithful, except for the obvious added scenes, and the "catalog" songs that were left out.

As Bennett states, there was no room for improvisation due to the lighting programming.

There's more to the world than hardcore fans.
It's gonna blow a few critics minds this fall.

And admit it, you've mostly seen the 1st Avenue tour warm-up as well, maybe more, since you seem to prefer it, so what's your point?

Why so blasé?

And you don't seem to realize that au contraire, the smart business move is to not fire all your bullets at once. It allows to put out a new edition some years later.

I understand your frustration as a fan, but there's a reason why compilations of previously unheard material keep on being released on a regular basis, long after the artist is gone.
As Billy would put it, "this is a business".

The crowd panoramic, right before the « On the one y'all! Confusion! » in "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" comes from Paris Bercy, June 14th.

Every French fan acquainted with how POPB looked at the time can confirm this. And I can confirm it because I'm in the shot.

I've always wondered how many SOTT concerts were actually filmed across Europe, because clearly this isn't the byproduct of a single camera shooting.

You are saying there is a shot from a Paris concert in the SOTT movie? Can you tell me what the timing in the movie is? I'm quite familiar with the Ahoy (and a bit with Bercy) and want to check if it is so. Also, what is POPB?

POPB stands for the original name of the arena, Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy.

As for the shot, I can't be any clearer than what I put in bold.
You'll have to push your screen brightness to 11.

In my copy, that shot is @1:11:58.

.

In any case, it might well be a shot from Paris, as in Ahoy there is a clearer separation between the "field" and the seated areas on the side. Also, I wouldn't expect a Kanterbrau add in the Netherlands as the brand is pretty much non-existent here.

.

They filmed the U Got The Look clip in Paris, on film (although in the movie it is from video, as it was edited on video, iiuc), so they had film cameras there. So there should be yet another full concert on film available... (he says hopefully). However, since a few seconds of that are in the movie, it might also be tangled up in the rights clusterfuck.

In short:

The non-news about stuff in the vauilt is not interesting.

It is only interesting if it is leaked in any way, including as a 'legitimate' Estate release.

It is a shot from Paris. I may get old, but I’m still able to recognize myself biggrin . The « U Got The Look » shooting confirms this.

Just meant that I could confirm it wasn't Ahoy. From the shot, I couldn't confirm it as Bercy (just haven't been there enough and the last time was for a Lovesexy show). Also, I couldn't match your avatar to any of the people in the shot! razz
