Soul Psychodelicide

Has anyone got any knowledge of the 1986 studio recording of Soul Psychodelicide?

I have heard versions from around 1989/1990 but they really didn't do much for me.

Were they based on the 1986 version? The length of the track suggests it maybe some kind of Jam rather than a fully realised song.

I feel I should be more excited about this song than I am. I think those 89/90 versions are the reason
I'm hoping it is totally different.

Well it'll surely be a live in the studio jam of some sort.

I doubt it resembles the 89 versions much. I'm not excited mostly because I can't stand the Revolution jamming. The Flesh sessions are the closest I'm into but that repetitive, allegedly James brown inspired shit is just so boring to me. I don't like any of their live shows either.

My only hope is that it's a proper track and not just a butchered 12 mn snippet from the awesome 07/22/1986 rehearsal (that, in itself, deserves to be released in full: contrarily to LoveGalore I never get tired of listening to it).

Unless of course it's an edit from the rehearsall made by P himself at the time (in a way similar to the Flesh edits), but then I'll need more evidence than Michael Howe's word before I believe it nod

I'd suspect it would be similar to "Cocoa Boys" or "Data Bank", overdubbing a choice portion of the rehearsal or soundcheck recordings. It wouldn't surprise me if there is a studio solo rerecording as well. The 1988+ version loops (and buries deep) an excerpt/sample of the drum pattern from the 1986 recording. Some of the ideas may be very, very loosely shared between the multiple versions.

I love the most finished version of "Soul Psychodelicide" with the George Clinton intro. I find it to be crazy in a good way.

I do find the Revolution era jams to get a little monotonous because of the emphasis on the Linn drum beat, which is usually just the 2/4 forever with hihats turned up, and the hand clap, and the classic rimshot touch.

This is why I'm not a huge fan of the studio track of "America".

Maybe all it needed was exaggerated quantize swing type variation!

Ur tripping. There's joy in repetition brother. Don't touch that groove. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, same beat. And not allegedly James Brown inspired, factually JB inspired. Called funk music my friend.

I challenge you to show me any song in James' catalog that sounds like Possessed live.

Prince did his funkiest and best James Brown style music with the NPG and that is pretty much undisputed. See: Sexy MF, The Work, Musicology, and on.

There is certainly joy in repetition, but remind yourself of that when you hear an alarm clock going off in the morning. To me, that's what The Revolution typically sounds like live during the 84-86 period.

Hopefully The Flesh was an indicator of where they would've gone in 1987 had they lasted that long. I'm grateful Prince allied himself with musicians who could actually pull off a JB sound live though.

Back on track, this song probably benefits from heavy overdubs as do all Revolution tracks pulled from live shows. See: Beautiful Night and half of PR.

"It's A New Day" and "Get It Together" come to mind...

Somebody knows what’s up! Jesus, never thought I’d live to see the day to find people on Prince.org of all places faking the funk...what has this place come to?

Time for another Whitney Houston thread, I guess lol

the amazon tracklist says "1986 master" .. that wouls suggest it was finished and not just an estate edited version of the rehearsal we have heard .. also everything renato touched was ruined to the point it was hard to enjoy a great drummer like john blackwell being wasted on elevator muzaq .. i really resent that guy and everything he played on .. i will take a 20 minute feline jam over his later colabs .. a lot of those jams were just learning the song anyway ... the later stuff was intentional and terribly bad

no he did not. his contributions on the ONA tour are absolutely phenomenal,
just because you don't like someone's style doesn't mean they ruin the show.
