So where does 6/86 Girl of my dream/Data Bank/Cant Stop/We can Funk go?

Do they squeeze them onto a Parade SDE?

I know there are only so many minutes but damn if these tracks need to get released.

My hunch is they have been reserved for Graffiti Bridge SD. I would have preferred them on SOTT, but as long as they get released eventually I can't complain.

Good call. I'm reckoning that it will be a while. Lots of albums that may derserve a deluxe release before that. (Parade, Dirty Mind, Controversy, AWTWIAD, Diamonds and Pearls, TGE)

sott deluxe was the most logical place for them, no contest. especially since they're in sequence. that ship has sailed, sadly.

i'm willing to forgive them since i'm just so damn excited for the rest of the set, but these songs are surely the most glaring omission. i think they'd stick out like a sore thumb on a GB deluxe but i guess that's where they're destined. data bank probably headed for a originals II.

They might, but GB already has quite a few old tracks.

1985-87
The Question of U

1986
Joy In Repitition

1987
Graffiti Bridge

1988
Still would stand all time
Elephants and flowers

When I look at these tracks, I see the ‘86 recordings of Girl o my dreams, Can’t stop, We can Funk fitting quite nicely next to them, especially if they’re earlier takes on the 1988 tracks. Graffiti Bridge because it’s such a hodge lodge collection, and was in the works for so long, will make a fascinating SDE, if it happens.

These have to be among among the most bootlegged Prince outtakes -I've lost count of the number of bootlegs these tracks are featutred in since the late 80's.

I agree that at this point, a Graffiti Bridge deluxe is the best place for the three in sequence. Girl O' My Dreams is the only one of the 4 not released in 1990, but the T.C. Ellis version came out in '91 (meh, it's not great. Haven't listened to it in about 20 years!)

But I really hope no matter what that they don't split GOMD off from Can't Stop and We Can Funk. That 3 song sequence is one of my favorite Prince outtakes of all time (and Data Bank is not far behind). I've always preferred this faster version of Can't Stop to the released version. I'd also love to have all four on the same release in order, so I'd love if they all end up on GB Deluxe. Data Bank was on Pandemonium, which is a "tie-in" album to GB (as Ice Cream Castles was to Purple Rain).
Imagine a 180g vinyl with these four songs in order! excited

I know GOMD and Data Bank could work on an Originals II release - but perhaps there are alternate recordings in the vault.... I wouldn't mind double dipping. wink

I know there are only so many minutes but damn if these tracks need to get released.

They really have little business being on Parade Deluxe, and they would be sonically awkward on a GB Deluxe, but admitedly it's hard to draw the line between albums (I'd be inclined to say anything recorded between 2 albums goes on the next, but this line of reasoning gets badly messed up with in the 90's), so who knows...

.

We must also simply accept the fact that there is TOO MUCH material in the vault for everything from a period to be included on ONE remaster boxset with only 2 or 3 CDs of outtakes alongside the main album. This is why I shrugged when I saw Extra and Lust weren't on 1999 Deluxe, then when I saw this beloved 1986 session you're talking about wasn't on SOTT, because anyway if they'd been there then something else would have been omitted instead, so anyway...

.

I was a little puzzled by the interview when the Paul Sinclair asks Michael Howe whether these releases mean everything else for this era will remain unreleased forever. WTF? Where did he get such a notion? There's room for so many kinds of releases in so many different formats, look at what the Bowie estate is doing (and they have so much less material to play with!!). The tracks you mention could be on a future "yet unreleased 1986 outtakes" CD. They could be released on a Prince online store if they ever make one. They could even make for a perfect little EP that would stand out for itself.

.

All we can hope is we'll live old enuff wink

I really think they'd sound quite nice next to The Question Of U's original mix before overdubs, and the lonedrum intro of Joy In Repitition!

Yes, given that GB was mostly made of older songs it depends what approach they choose. They could focus on outtakes from the 89-90 era, with the GB/CW sound, but they could also go deeper into the archives and unearth old versions of the tracks.

I gotta admit that because of the approach taken with We Can Fuck on PR Deluxe, then Bold Generation and Can't Stop on 1999, I assumed the Deluxe archives would be based on the time period not demos of the songs on the album, but ICNTTPOYM '79 on SOTT Deluxe (not to mention Originals in the middle but with The Dance Electric and Train on reissues), it appears it's more like whatever feels right to them in a certain context.

So yeah, why not after all...
