Consistent Words/Themes Often Used by Prince in His Songs

Of course I am enjoying the Sirius XM Prince channel for the month of May! I've always noticed his affinity towards different words/concepts/themes tht are mentioned throughout a lot of his songs, but this time I started to compile a list:

  • Doves
  • Dance/dancing
  • Pimps
  • Angels (usually crying)
  • Ass
  • Hair
  • Rain
  • Thunder
  • Funk
  • Sunshine
  • Water/bathtub
  • Domestic violence
  • Gemini references

I know there are a lot more - what do you notice?

Has anyone ran his lyrics through those word cloud generators? I'd bet there are some less obvious ones. I mean, the biggest one might be "love" or something generic like that but it would be interesting...

Well, based on the exclusion of a few tracks on the recent "1999" set, he used the theme of "Rape" at least two times too much... mad

Kinda underselling it here, if they were nothing more than "themes" they mighta been out already.

He included references to God in quite a bit of his music, and how to treat others.

Except he didn't because those were two songs Prince decided not to release. The only reason we even know about the existence of those songs is due to unauthorised leaks. Hardly qualifies as a 'consistent' word or theme then, does it?

Moreover, when Prince actually released the only official version of 'Extraloveable' he removed the lyric in question.

"Extraloveable" original version 1982 and "Lust U Always" both use the word "rape" in the lyrics. Both are pretty great songs (at the very least musically) that you should probably be familiar with if you haven't heard already.

He still recorded them. He "decided not to release" a ton of stuff that is regularly discussed/name-dropped here on a routine basis.
