The Detroit 82 bootleg is one of my favourites. Despite my preference for the live performance of Automatic, rather than Lady Cab Driver and With You (Instrumental) and the incorporation of little extras on the following night's late show - the boot has consistant energy throughout.

I find the Official Release of the late show to pale in comparison. The drums are flat and the guitars are hard panned and coated in reverb, making the mix often unballenced (particularly painful during solos). Hearing the more defined bassline is nice, but also lacks a lot of energy (compare Let's Work between both nights). There are points where it seems that they had to use other sound sources for Prince's vocal (the end of Controversy).

Not to turn this into a Michael Howe bash-fest, but his claim that David Z mixed this like the audience heard it has got to be bollocks. Not only is it silly to claim that someone remembers what a concert sounds like 40 years later, but we also have enough boots to determine this isn't the case.

Which do you prefer? Or is there another 1999 Tour bootleg thats your go-to?

Personally I would pick the late show because I really enjoy the mix especially on headphones. It just hits all the right notes for me when it comes to the balance between the energy of the performance and the clarity brought by a brand new mix

Not to comment on these releases, but a lot of shows don't translate on tape and being in the room just had a different feel. So like if David Z. just remembers the shows sounded more heavy or bassy or the synths cut through you, then trying to replicate that would be different than what we've heard from soundboard recordings, which rarely capture the show.

Even if true, is there really no way to kind of clean it a little? We were told P&AM83 could have been improved, why not this?

I like both those Detroit shows but I like the earlier one from the bootlegs better. Maybe not so much for quality, although the bootleg is very good, but also for the feel. I just get a better vibe from the earlier one.
