It's widely known and accepted that the original multitrack was erased. There has been some speculations over the years about a rough mix committed to cassette tape.

It's there, but it's the re-record version that's been circulating in poor quality for a few years.

Hell, even the circulating version is great IMO. Sure, could have been mind blowing to have been able to hear the original version. But, we'll at least get to hear a crystal clear version of the one circulating. Will be one of the highlights for me anyway. Shit, this set is FULL of highlights actually!! Man do I love pizza...

Strange. Perhaps they have had better than expected demand?

My pre-order is still showing £143. I wonder if they'll have the cheek to cancel it.

Seems to be pretty standard for Amazon UK to put expensive sets up a low price for 24 hours, hike the price right up for a while, then drop it again before the release date. I remember them doing this with the Beatles stereo and mono box sets 10+ years ago, and on lots of pre-orders since then.

Anyway, as long as you ordered it when it was £143 then you've locked in that price, and if it doees drop below that before the release date, you'll get it for the cheaper price.

I'm confident the Amazon UK price will drop from it's current £200 level, however it's currently £149.99 + shipping at https://www.recordstore.c...KTJ0000000 if you want to be certain of getting a better price.

It's down to $125 in the US, not sure if deepdiscount.com has a UK store but look there.

I am so excited for this set. So much to digest. I am still debating on CD vs Vinyl. I have 2 vinyl copies of the original album (one was a gift) and honestly sound great. I have the CD on order but might switch it.

Anyway, one thing I can't wait to hear is that Shep remix version of Strange Relationship just for the fact that its from an earlier version of the song. Its one of my all time fave songs.

So wondering what was the other version of I Could Never Take the Place of your Man that circulated a few years ago (which I LOVE). I was assuming it was an abandoned Shep remix...but maybe it was fan-made? I am surprised its not on here since SR remix is. Nit-picking I know...but just wondering.

Even better, Norman Records, an excellent independent UK wrecka stow, have it for £141.99 including shipping.

I'm holding on with ordering until September. Last year I got the 1999 LP box for about half the price in Hungary (the list price was already way below what it went for in Western Europe, and then MediaMarkt had some sale that meant a further 30% came off that lower price).

They don't have a UK store. We can order from DD US, and the shipping is extremely reasonable, but once we get stung by customs + handling it's likely to work out about £135 ($167), plus we'd have the agonising wait of an extra 10 days or something.

Here's the best UK price yet for the vinyl set though:

https://burningshed.com/p...ion_boxset

£249.99 + £8.82 shipping.

Decent wrecka stow, I hear. On their FAQ section they explain about price rises.

Interesting claim that the extended Dorothy Parker doesn’t seem to exist. What was the original source of info about it?

I have a faint recollection of traders claiming here to have it or having heard it but honestly this could be a fake memory or it could have been unreliable sources, it goes back. Maybe as others said the 1mn longer version as as long as it gets. I don't think anyone in P's camp ever mentioned an extended version but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not gonna comment everything, I'm cool with most of what Mr. Howe says. Just a few things.

.

1/ Thank you Mr. Howe for talking to us.

.

2/ "If anything, we had to be judicious about it because there were a number of things that were unfinished ideas, or instrumentals that were intended for The Flesh" contradicts "the ballpark was basically late March of 1986 – basically after Parade had been delivered and gone into production, meaning there were going to be no further changes on it – through to the middle of 1987". I know I'm being picky, this is just to make a point about the fact that the fandom is paying attention to details.

.

2/ "So the only bona fide rarity or vault track from Camille album is ‘Rebirth of the Flesh’, with the original outro, which I don’t believe has even circulated amongst bootleg collectors, but with the things that have been released and that track, you can listen to Camille from front to back, as it was envisioned" -> As far as I know from reliable sources, the test pressing based cassette of Camille that's doing the rounds among traders has the same version of ROTF as the circulating Crystal Ball configuration and every other bootleg. Now it's possible that 1/ There was a slightly different config of Camille or 2/ I was lied to. Again, just paying attention to details.

.

3 / "And the idea was to include everything so that the listener – and this is in the streaming world, obviously – could sequence any of those things in the way that he or she wants. You know, if you want to listen to the original Dream Factory you can do that, if you want to listen to Camille as it was originally envisioned, you can do that." -> Indeed we can listen to close approximations, and it's cool, but not the exact configs as envisioned if only because some released mixes are still slightly different than the mixes on some configs, not to mention the space between tracks and crossfades. Please do not assume we do not know our sh**, Mr. Howe. Now I'm not saying this is a problem with this particular SOTT Deluxe release, it's cool as it is and indeed too many alternate tracks would have been redundant, I totally agree. But you know what to do to make fans happy for Record Stores Day: release the configs as such. Make it 1987 vinyl and CD collectors' copies if you will, then don't be cheap and after maybe one or 2 or 3 years just put it on streming services or Bandcamp. No harm done, more money for the estate, fans happy smile

.

4/ "But you know, there are no creative liberties taken." -> The correct way to phrase this is "We took a few creative liberties on Originals and saw the fans' feedback was negative, it was a mistake and we decided to never do it again". Just ADMIT it for God's sake!! All can be forgiven, Originals' tracks can be rereleased in proper form at a later date. But we all know, EVERYONE knows, so why keep pretending it didn't happen and, by doing so, insult the fanbase?

.

5/ "I’m very excited for people to hear [Witness] version two, which I think is a lot less common, certainly in the collector’s and trader’s circles. I don’t know that for sure, but I hope it is" -> Oh believe me we've had it for about 30 years (and not just the elite traders, it was on CD bootlegs as early as 1991 if not earlier). Not to say it's a problem, it's gonna be awesome to have it in better quality. Just, again, to say that we're paying attention wink

.

Apart from that, I'm fine with everything that was said and, so far, I have absolutely no complaint with the announed release and the choices that were made. It seems awesome. I hope it'll be awesome. So thank you Mr. Howe for making the next release better than the one before and so on. let's built trust, shall we?

• Curious to know why they (Michael Howe?) decided to put all the tracks Prince offered to Bonnie Rait in the set. Believe we all have heard Jealous Girl and the Bonnie Raitt's version of I Need A Man and i'm excited to hear the other two – it just seems a bit odd as these tracks weren't really linked to Sign "O" The Times. They in fact were all recorded in 1981/83. Very excited to hear all these tracks, but can't help to feel the selection is somewhat random? Also for including 1979 verion of ICNTTPOYM. Maybe the liner notes in the accompanied book will tell.

Very thankful for all these tracks getting a release, but after reading that Michael Howe interview I didn't really get the impression there was a real strategy behind it – which perhaps is also impossible.

some quotes from the interview:

"If anything, we had to be judicious about it because there were a number of things that were unfinished ideas, or instrumentals that were intended for The Flesh [a loose band initiative that never came to fruition] or other projects that really weren’t necessarily envisioned for one of the three tentpole releases that you just mentioned."

"That’s it, for the most part. There were multiple variants, or mixes, with very, very few differences, that aren’t necessarily represented here. In an effort to be as respectful and complete as possible we included everything that was theoretically a master; you know either a rough mix or something that was designated to be used as a master, so if there are variants of those mixes, or instrumentals or other things that are off-shoots if you like, they aren’t necessarily included."

These answers make makes me think there must be so much more in the vault, we've never heard of.

• Also curious as to whether Love And Sex is the Prince version of that Sheila E. version that's been floating around or is it a re-worked version of the 1984 Love And Sex? I am assumming the first and hopefully with Prince on vocals – as I think it would be a killer track.

I remember the earliest bootleg of Rebirth of The Flesh I heard back in 1988 had an awkward sudden hard end after "Come To The Crystal Ball" (like someone screwed up the tape). (Back then it had been mis-titled "Souly-A-Colia"!) Then it was quite a few years later that I finally heard the version sequenced for the Crystal Ball LP that segued into Play In The Sunshine (with the machine gun noises). The one from the Camille test pressing has a smoother fade after "Come To The Crystal Ball". But I can believe that there should be a standalone master that has continues after that ending - otherwise I don't know why they'd use the word "Outro". I guess we will have to wait and see. (I get a bit obsessive over this song I've loved for 30+ years and wanted in perfect quality!)
