What's your take on the Diamonds And Pearls Video Collection VHS/ DVD?

I actually liked it. People say the interviews with the NPG members was boring - I'd agree although I am impressed with the solo performances of Rosie Gaines, Michael Bland and Tommy Barbarella in between those interviews. This was also the first time I seen a live concert clip of "Live 4 Love".

Also like the Bill O'Reilly snippet at the beginning. lol

or 3 Chains O' Gold for that matter. Hopefully in time they will be made available again.

As for the D&P video collection, I dig it. It's far from my favourite album but the extended videos and various clips are good. Those shiny early 90s videos are a real time capsule just the same way the early 80s videos are.

When I finally got my life back after being homeless and getting myself thru cosmetology school, I bought some furniture & a TV and VCR from a friend's sister. I had two VHS tapes to watch. One of them was Diamonds and Pearls Video Collection. I loved "Willing and Able," the whole "Cream" and "Diamonds and Pearls" sequence.

I was doing my hair like Prince's (slightly altered, no fingerwaves, but hot iron curls on top) and I would go home, fix dinner with a silk scarf tied around my head like he did in "Gett Off." LOL

The film maker released the full version of "Daddy Pop," because there is only a clip on the compilation. I really loved the "Godfather III meets Barbarella" look during that time. The typhoon do, his clothes (the Game Boyz looked dumb, actually) - it was all good stuff and it was boiled down in that video.

3 Chains O' Gold was just as good, as far as video compilations go.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The willing and able performance is phenomenal and as good as the SOTT concert movie performance of 'forever in my life'

I wished he had performed a show with that organic set up. Live drums, organ performing most synth duties, the steeles on background vocals etc.

I always thought Strollin' looked great - it could've been a hit with a full version of that video if it had been released as an A side.

I have the vhs and dvd and there are some parts on the dvd that are horribly pixelated - cant remember the last time I watched it.

I really like the song Strollin and was very happy to see it in video form as part of this collection.

Good choice of songs and a very positve overall vibe during this era. I wish he had made more video collections and mini-movies like this.

I also like that little bit at the end of the other video release, Get Off, where he plays Clockin the Jizz on the Hohner.

But that wasn't live though? I read the YT comments and they claim that this was just a playback performance.

It was a mix of both, I would imagine. Some of Prince's vocals are spot on, some are a bit too far away from the mic to be real. So it's audio from one take, and a mix of video from that and another take. Not totally unusual. But the audio is "live" in that it was recorded during the shoot.

Love it. I'd only just become a fan in 91 so I used to watch it on repeat. Along with the Gett Off and Sexy M.F VHS's.

.

As already stated the Willing And Able live studio clip is superb.

.

Scott McCullough has released some other clips recently from this time but he must have a lot more, which will hopefully come out.

Yep. Hence my comparison with that other incredible 'live/playback' performance.

It could just be his greatest vocal recording. I think an MTV "unplugged" style show in a similar vein to this performance would have been legendary.

Absolutely agree. He'd certainly done plenty of piano segments in shows, plus the guitar stuff during Musicology era. But that close-knit jam band sort of approach would've been nice to see. He could've done the original "Kiss" and "Alphabet St." versions of songs, a percussion heavy "Strange Relationship" jam, plus songs like "Forever In My Life," "Glam Slam," "Raspberry Beret," "America," "Free," "Reflection," "Strollin'," "Guitar," and "Big City" would've made for great moments.

If he did Unplugged, all he would need to do is play one song... Thieves In The Temple acoustic version just like he did during the Earls Court D&P tour. If he did that... Nobody would've rememered the Kurt Cobain Unplugged lol

I love the D&P Video Collection! It's been at least a year since I watched it, so I can't remember all of the details. However, I really love the live concert footage. The choreography for this album's tour was outstanding.
