Darth Vader Voice on The Rainbow Children

I fought so hard to finally find a new copy of TRC and it was in the Used section of the local music store. I paid all but $9.99 for it and was elated! I brought it home, began playing it and over the music spoke this deep, dark, Darth Vader-ish voice that, for ME, ruined the entire experience! I couldn't and still can't understand a single word he's saying. I don't think I'm goin' deaf or anything like that, but I just struggle 2 HEAR and make sense of the words he's speaking. Henceforth, I passed on the Sony/Legacy version that just came out. Unless the remastering affects the spoken parts 4 the better, I can only predict further disappointment. The music is great. The voice ruins it 4 me. Anyone else share in this? sad

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

There are versions of the album 'out there' with the Darth Vader parts changed to normal vocals.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Yeah, and it's not hard to do. Just a pitch shift on those parts and you're good. But if there's music in the background, it'll affect those, too.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I have always seen it as a P-Funk thing, never bothered me in the slightest, thought it was a pretty cool aspect to the album.

Doesn't bother me. He uses basically the same effect on All My Dreams - which is probably my fave outtake. I have more of a problem with the dogma on TRC than anything else.

Never bothered me either but then again, I never had any problem understanding what was being said. If you can't understand it, I wouldn't worry too much, he's mostly speaking nonsense.

RIP sad

I also never understood at all why people call it the Darth Vader voce and not just the slowed down voice. To me, it doesn't sound anything at all like Darth Vader. But maybe that's because I'm a huge Star Wars nerd and Darth's voice has been listened to regularly for over 40 years.

RIP sad

Doesn't bother me at all. It's really just a deep narrative voice; another persona reminiscent of Bob George. Prince used a similar voice later on 'Ain't Gonna Miss U When U're Gone' and 'The Gold Standard' and I find its placement in those songs very enjoyable.

The chipmunk voice in 'Breakfast Can Wait' is a little more startling though... wink

That's what I was wondering. James Earl Jones still voiced Darth in Rogue One, Rebels, Rise of Skywalker etc.

Same here...IF Prince had James Earl Jones record those parts back in 2001, I'd actually love the album even more giggle

I love it. I think people are more against the message and the genre of music than the voice itself.

:

No one had a problem with the voice in the beginning of 1999 (albeit it was not pervasive throughout the entire album) or the Camille voice. I'm baffled how people can be diehard Prince fans but not also appreciate his message about his relationship with God. I understand that message may not be for everyone, but I would assume that if you are not down with that message then you will find another artist to like. I doin't think that you can be a liberal and be a diehard fan of Sean Hannity. His relationship with God is the core of who he is and what his music is about.

:

Prince's relationship with God is pervasive in a lot of his music and it was that way from the start. Lovesexy was preachy. The Cross was preachy. The Ladder, Temptation, Annie Christian, 4 The Tears in Your Eyes and For You were preachy. Despite what many of you say, a lot of they Purple Rain material, i.e., Let's Go Crazy, the end of Darling Nikki, God, Purple Rain and I Would Die 4 U were overtly preachy.

:

I think the difference with the Rainbow Children is it is not commercial pop. People were okay with the message as long as it was packaged as commercial pop. I'm not sure how you can be a diehard Prince fan and only appreciate his commercial pop stuff.

:

We get what we deserve in terms of the Estate releasing stuff. We can't expect casual fans to want to explore his later (and much more interesting) catalogue when the diehards are stuck in the 1982-1988 sound.

No one has ever replaced JEJ for Darth Vader. And since he was never in the suit, there's been no replacement.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

i thought i had read somewhere that there was a replacement for his voice in one of the prequels but i got it confused somehow with something i read about the Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader character...

OMG! I SO WISH he did that for the entire release and that the "out there" copies are with the Darth Vader interludes! Too bad the newly remastered THC doesn't offer BOTH of these versions! sad <3

That actually sounds sorta familiar. Maybe you're thinking of Boba Fett, they changed his voice to the act whose face we saw. Also, there was a "NO!" added from James Earl Jones in some scene. I can't keep up with Lucas's fucking tinkering with it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

We are splitting hairs about the 1999 voice vs. the Rainbow Children voice.

:

If Rainbow Children is Dogma then so is I Would Die 4 U, The Cross, Lovesexy, Purple Rain, Temptation, The Ladder, 4 the Tears in Your Eyes, Annie Christian, etc. Prince's relationship with God is literally what his music was about. That relationship had many aspects.

:

TRC explored that relationship in a provocative way that challenged us, much like what is happening in the U.S right now with difficult questions that our society is grappling over. Ultimate, this process will provoked enough to be uncomfortable and will force us to look deeper within for answers is what will get us closer to the truth. We are already seeing a lot of change as a result of that provocation. That is what TRC is about and what his entire career was about.

:

That was literally the message of the Purple Rain tour that so many of you loved so dearly and hold out to be his golden age. What did you think his dialogue with God was about before he sung the song God? That was easily as "preachy" and "dogmatic" as anything he did on TRC. You were okay with the "dogma" then but it is different when it is not accompanied with Take Me With U and replaced with Family Name?

:

I'm not feeling most of the fans and former associates who speak the loudest now that Prince is gone. I'm afraid about what they are doing to his legacy.
