Not in a milion years.

Baltimore was a turd and Purple and Gold (what i assume would be P's blueprint for an 'epic' protest song) was beyond shame.

What was the song where he alluded to James Byrd's brutal prolonged execution?

Baltimore never did much for me, it felt restrained and lacking the layers and emotions I wanted from him.... but it sounds a lot more right today.

I dunno - Black Muse wasn't written a million lightyears ago... - he may have stepped up to the plate.

not sure if the lyrics were written by prince or judith or by both,
but her song "As Trains Go By" sort of fits in this situation, no?

I see what you did. Credit where it's due
.
It's an obvious one and it's one that's grown on me over the years; We March.
.
I disliked it for years as I blamed it for Days Of Wild being dumped from TGE but I really enjoy it now especially whilst jogging

But wasn't "Purple and Gold" a song for a basketball team, not a protest song?

To the OP: Prince has written plenty of protest-esque songs which spoke out against the ills of society, some more specific than others:

Annie Christian

Ronnie, Talk 2 Russia

Sexuality

Uptown

Partyup

Free

America

Live 4 Love

Dance On

Positivity

Baltimore

Cinnamon Girl

Money Don't Matter 2 Nite

Race

We March

Slave

Dear Mr. Man

Right The Wrong

Resolution

Family Name

...to name a few.

yes black muse is good, Family Name , another. I don't mean I don't think he still couldn't write a great song. I mean on a more consistent basis than he did up to around 95/96. Just my own opinion. I have enjoyed all of Princes albums/music. Hes my favorite Music artist by a country mile!

Baltimore has grown on me as a nice song - but at the time I really was expecting/hoping for something with some anger and power behind it. It's a bit soft to make a statement. I think most would agree.

Cinnamon Girl - kind of the same argument
Dear Mr. Man - kind of the same argument

I miss the power of Partyup, the energy of Ronnie Talk To Russia, the artistry of America, the starkness of Sign O The Times and the quirkiness of Dance On.

Dreamer was on point though.

There are all these:

https://music.apple.com/n...mj5clzdxYD

During his storied career Prince had lots of protest songs. This playlist included close to two and half hours of these. The playlist begins with Mavis Staples singing a Prince written You will Be Moved which was included on her The Voice album which was released under Prince's Paisley Park Records and also on Prince's 1-800-New-Funk compilation album which at the time had largely unreleased music from Prince and related Paisley Park artists. This and the other tracks in this playlist including New Power Generation, Dreamer, Dear Mr Man, Colonized Mind, Right the Wrong, 2gether, Race, Dance On, America, Slave, Sign O' the Times, The Future, When Will We b Paid?, Count the Days, Emancipation, Free, Baltimore, Chaos and Disorders, We March and others form a great playlist to help support and bring light to and understanding of the issues that surround the Black Lives Matter protests around the world. Have listen and read the lyrics to see how almost prophetic Prince may have been.

Wish The Estate would make a formal version of this playlist and release it on all platforms and consider selling downloads of it too.

Hell no. Prince was good at a lot of stuff, but expressing (or even understanding), nuanced political thought wasn’t one of them. “The main problem with war is that nobody ever wins”? Sorry. No. That is even close to being the main problem with war. That’s Arms of Orion bad. He’d have ended up writing the Jughead of protest songs. Prince’s political/protest lyrics read like bumper stickers - and not the clever bumper stickers you occasionally see.

I actually don't think so, at least not an epic protest song.

Nothing. It's a great song. Yes, it's more conversational, doesn't make it weak.

He may or may not have written an epic protest song. However, one thing is for absolute certain... he would have played a guitar solo at some point which reflected and encapsulated the pain/hope of these times. That is without question.
