Which one year is the best? 85? 86? Or 87? I see fans cite 85-87 as his peak creative genius phase. (Not to say his later work wasn’t good, his mid 90s periods was great) But which one year would you pick out of those 3 that beats them all and why?

1986, I would argue was one of Prince's finest years ever when even just looking at the Prince Vault list of songs recoreded that year. The variety, scope, and quality of those songs are massive

They're all untouchable, but for me, 85 still has him using that fantastic guitar tone from Purple Rain (specifically i'm thinking on songs like Empty Room and Dear Michealangelo-ish), while looking forward to the 86 sound. You can hear him experimenting more with where to go next. Not in your list, but my favorite output year is 1989... but that's for another thread.

1986 is otherworldly magical. 87 is professional excellence.
85 is actually a let down from 82-84
