I Gotta Shake This Feeling, Baby - 1984 outtake

There is already an an old thread about this but I can't reply to it for some reason so I'm reviving it in the form of a new thread. I love this rehearsal/demo version. It's Prince singing 'I Gotta Shake this Feeling, Baby' and improvising over the melody of 'Purple Rain'. It's one of my favorite outtakes. I just noticed when posting this that it's also currently on YouTube. There, it says that it's the embryonic demo version of the Purple Rain song that Prince gave to Stevie Nicks (to listen to) because he wanted her to do the lyrics (?) I have no idea if that's true but nonetheless it's a beautiful version and I really love it, especially his emotional singing and the piano notes, which differ slightly from the released version.

That's got to be it. She describes the lyrices here:

Seve Nicks stories always check out despite coming off far fetched or like she's full of it.

Thanks for this. Wow, I remember reading this story from her a while ago but can’t remember where, and I thought it was about LRC. I didn’t connect that it was for this song, but yeah, she must be referring to this demo. I think Duane Tudahl references it in his book and that’s where I’m remembering it from.

Yeah the LRC story was that she wrote Stand Back as a knock off of LRC and then called Prince who did the synth line. I think you may be right that she has another story that's very similar about another track too. With PR, she's referencing these scratch lyrics, and it's essentially a draft of PR. Pretty stunning to be able to confirm this story and get to hear the demo.

Oh, and all the music press picked up the same quotes from her.

One of mine, too. I absolutely love it! Thanks for bringing it here. : )

Never realized it could be the demo Prince gave to Stevie Nicks.

Trying to imagine what it must have been like to get this as something to build on and develop. I'm not a musician, and it would obviously be a completely different experience for someone with Stevie's gifts.

I'd have just been like...that's it right there. Don't add a thing! Don't change a thing!

He was just adlibbing he was probably just tired of rehearsing the song as is... This was a rehearsal for his June 7th 1984 gig, "Purple Rain" was all done by then...

Same here, he even threw some lyrics of Another Lonely Christmas in I Gotta Shake This Feeling, Baby that one was also already recorded and done by the time of this rehearsal.
Does anyone have a exact date for this rehearsal?

Don't know, but Reply #4 says it was a rehearsal for the June 7, 1984 gig (which would've been his birthday show at First Avenue). I looked for it in Duane Tudahl's book but didn't see it listed.

It is indeed a rehearsal for the June 7th BDay show. This was very likely in June of 1984, right before the show.
