. Again: this song dates back at least a decade before it was released. Recorded in his late 30s/early 40s. Released when he was in his early 50s. Your whole premise is based on a failure to acknowledge that fact. . The instrumental and early configurations of the song were worked on during that period, yes. But there is no evidence that Prince's lyrics for the released version of the song were not written or developed closer to the songs release. Clearly, it was not released in any of its older forms due to the presence of Shelby and Liv on backing vocals - two artists that were not working with Prince from 95-2000. * [Edited 5/20/20 17:28pm]

wow, even after he's gone, maybe even moreso, his fans remain quite insufferable at times. i'm one, so that includes me, but i can follow a thread and stay on subject, and disagree agreeably.
about the song. i agree with the OP and Vinaysfunk. Prince did evolve and was evolving and while the concept wasn't exactly new, he builds upon aspects of the song we'd seen pieces of in other places. nothing wrong with revisiting, adding to old ideas to make a new creation, even if it has older iterations. i for one have stated, i've come to appreciate Prince as an editor immensely when i hear old, vault versions of songs, or separate songs that never made it out
I don't get the idea that's its a Beautiful Ones "ripoff" at all. He sings in a completely different voice (i remember on here when the album came out, someone called it, his grown man "chest voice") TBO is about a specific person, this song is about a more transcendant, spiritual love for humanity

It kinda grates on me What does ‘this is the future soul song’ mean? The whole thing is just a bit weak. Green virgin teenager, or filthy rich yuppy. Pussy cat pussy cat, where for out thou puppy

I've always loved this song. It's definitely a standout track from recent years. Very ethereal and esoteric yet earthy and real. Only Prince could achieve this with 1 song 😎✌❤

I always liked the music, but I hate songs that lyrically refer to themselves as songs - I have no idea why Feel the same way about One Song, Cybersingle etc. I just think, if you ever find yourself writing lyrics along the lines of "this is a song!" maybe get some fresh air and try again tomorrow
