Bono wrote 60 letters to or about those that inspired him for his 60th birthday. Here's the one he wrote for/about Prince.

Any idea what he meant about "wish I was close enough to take the nails and hammer out of your hands"? (besides the obvious Cross reference)

I've read that a few times and decided that he wished he could have saved Prince's life.

The interesting thing, to me, is that he calls P a "musical genius" up top and then at the bottom says the opposite.

But it's lovely and generous.

He's saying he wished he was close enough to have given him an intervention and saved his life.

It's a sentiment nobody should burden them with (the cross to bear), but it's also the kind of thing I appreciate he's voicing. It was a senseless loss.

I took it as Bono saying that Prince had an overinflated sense of himself and was determined to make himself a martyr for music.
