Whimsical Prince I always loved the fact that Prince was so imaginative.
Prince was 1 of those composers whose albums I loved front 2 back (although I confess that that changed 4 me personally starting with the album "newpowersoul", but I won't go in2 that ). He had an amazing & rare gift 4 melody. 1 of the many things he did I always loved was when he was whimsical. That was naturally in, from what I could tell, both his music & everything else he did. 4 example - although it wasn't musical in itself, I 1st encountered his personal shorthand style after seeing the "Purple Rain" record cover in '85, & I've used it ever since then as it felt fun & I thought it added an extra sense of fun 2 my cartoons. (It also unfortunately - quite unintentionally - drove a couple of my friends nuts at the time, lol). I didn't have MTV yet in 1985, so the 1st video of his I got 2 see at some1 else's house was "Raspberry Beret", & I fell in love with both it & his entire "Around The World in A Day" album. I both loved the playful style he was displaying & admired the freedom he had in decorating his albums (i.e. the central decals on his vinyl records, from "1999" onward), & in videos such as "Mountains" & "Alphabet St." I kept thinking 2 myself, "Man, if I was a musician, I'd enjoy every minute of doing all that." & his melodies got so irresistibly infectious - "Christopher Tracy's Parade", "Elephants & Flowers", "Starfish & Coffee" ... that last 1 I was delighted 2 see him perform as a guest on "Muppets Tonight" & 2 actually be on there period! He looked like he was having a blast, & I loved how the show was emphasizing his ability 2 come up with song ideas spontaneously - something which quite a few people don't see 2 realize out there. I loved his music incredibly, but - maybe this is just my seeing the good in others, but I have the feeling it's not just me - I had always gotten the impression that Prince had a strong side of his personality that loved 2 stay young, some1 who remembered well the stuff he enjoyed as a child & knew how important it was 2 keep all that with U as U get older & still have that part of U where U remained young at heart, especially thru the bad times. That's the special part of him which I think was 1 of the many special qualities that made him remarkable among his peers. He could get deathly serious, sure, but he did seem 2 have that other side of himself inside. I'll always be grateful 2 him 4 that. [Edited 5/28/20 11:15am]

Yes. Great thread. I couldn't agree more. One of my favorite qualities of Prince was his sense of humor and his want and need to often infuse his funny side. It definitely was a huge part of who he was and it was one of the many things that drew me to him and his music. Those that were close to him and in his inner circle often talk about his pranks and his constant need to joke around. It was most commonly said that this guy loved to goof around. And no it wasn't just you seeing it. Prince put his whisical side on display often 4 all to see.

"That's what kept me around, the childlike part of him." (paraphrased) Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

I'm also impressed that he was able 2 do that on what was only his 2nd album. Granted, there are album covers much more "explicit" out there, but still, it's cool that he was able 2 do that when he was still so new 2 recording. It always struck me as a very innocent, harmless picture in the tradition of the early Greeks. I wonder who created the pegasus? The effect looks perfect!

Wow, that picture brings back memories ;) I also loved how on lyric sheets included in "1999" & "Around The World in a Day" he wrote each word in a different font!

i hadnt thought about this photo having such a 3d movement element 2 it. very alive. i like the AlTeRnAtInG fonts, too many of the people i admire are actually fictional characters, but prince is a fairytale hero come true, which makes me feel a bit more sane i think flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup
