A Beautiful Experience / Feb 13, 1994 / Details?

Aside from portions of the original songs used in the TV special, and the incredible bootleg album of the night, are there any written accounts of this night?

I would love to see the other portions of this concert since it was shot multicam. I want to know what was going on on the stage during, like, "What'd I Say" or "Martial Law". Who was playing what?

Yes, I’d love to see the whole show too.
.
I had a shitty quality audio boot of the whole night back in the day.
I’m sure Tony M was on with some other rappers before the main show.
.
One poster, motherfunka I believe, has put up a good detailed report in the past.

I wrote this up a couple years ago on another thread about the event...

I attended the show for $100.00 and the night was epic! Much of the lower level of Paisley Park was open to view, most notably the studios. I had been in Paisley Park before for after parties and private concerts, but nothing like this.

.

Prior to the actual concert Eric Leeds played in Studio C where they had some tables set up, like a little jazz club. Jacob Armin was in the band.

.

They had a "gift shop" set up in the lobby and were selling The Most Beautiful Girl In The World single, as is was yet unreleased.

.

A press table was also set up in the lobby, as there were a lot of celebrities in attendance due to the fact that the NBA All Star game was the same weekend.

.

Also prior to the concert they did a fashion show to the Come version shown in the Beautiful Experience video. They then introduced the girls who won the Most Beautiful Girl In The World contest and then proceeded to show the video for the first time. Mayte and Jamie King also did their routine to Pheromone.

.

After that an announcer introduced Tony Mosley and crew and they came onto the stage and "rapped" a song, don't know what it was or haven't heard it since. Obviously the low point of the evening!

.

Lastly, Prince and the NPG came on stage. At the time the band were being billed as 10,000. It ended up being the same line up. Not sure what that was all about. The rest is documented on several boots. After the show was over, so was the event. Michael Bland handed me one of his drumsticks. One of the highlights was Prince playing drums.

.

About a month later they showed the clips of The Jam and Shhh at Glam Slam. I was so excited to see myself front and center in the videos. In April they premiered the Beautiful Experience film. I was a little disappointed with that, as a lot of the concert was cut and videos from Come were mixed in. Although, it was nice to have a live document of something I had went to.

Sonny talks a bit about it, on the Peach & Black Podcast I think.
.
On the track What’d I Say you hear Prince tell someone to solo but nothing happens and P says ‘ladies and gentleman, Bud Light.’
I’m paraphrasing but Sonny said he was a good local musician who’d been saying to P ‘let me get up and I’ll kick your ass (on guitar).’ So P calls him up but he can’t get a sound out the guitar and he was sure P had messed with it and set him up!

Hands down one of my favorite bootleg VHS from back the day. It was probably the first VHS boot I ever bought, at Starship Records & tapes in Tulsa, OK. It was part record store, part head shop, the latter of which (at the time) I had no idea about. I watched it over and over and over. What a fun concert and set of videos.

Thanks for sharing, MF. Such a great remembrance! Good to read something that feels real, off the cuff instead of some of the contrived crap others have put out! Wish I could have been there with you that nite...

The Leeds/Armen per4mance is brefly seen in the TBE TV special.

Your account conflicts with what 4DF claimed when reconstructing the 1994 promo tape: they claim the TMBGITW video premiere happened during the show, between Now and The Ride. I'd have to chack Uptown Mag as suggested by Bart (I don't have Prince Family issues).

I'd be tempted to create a new thread but since we're here, I'd like to know if anyone ever heard the 1994 promo tape that was sent to radios at the time, I mean the actual DAT not the broadcasts.

4DF "reconstructed" the broadcast by adding the Mr. Hayes solo to The Jam and the TMBGITW video premiere. Since I'm only aware of one circulating radio recording (DRS-3 radio or something like that, not sure if other boots were sourced from others), what I don't know is whether these parts were edited out the DAT before broadcast by the radio station, or if Prince made the edits himself.

Did they do "Acknowledge Me" before the show too? It looks like it was from the same night. I know bits of the "Pheromone" video were from the 'Welcome 2 Erotic City" shows at Glam Slam in January '94 as well as the Beautiful Experience show.

Always loved of "Shhhh" from this show. Much better, IMHO, than the studio version.

The good news: The Prince Family has a ton of reports etc. The bad news: I'll probably just give you a zip with a bunch of photos of the relevant portions of those issues because there is no way I'm gonna spend hours OCR-ing it all. However, I do hope you go through it all and report back to the community what you've found.

Googling "The Prince Family" / magazine / fan / musician isn't turning up leads. Is there some kind of online archive?

I think Prince was just running around the stage during Martial Law not playing anything. I didn't know who was playing the piano. Prince played drums on Peep The Technique.

The keyboard player was a local guy, Bruno Mars lookin, early 20's.. unfortunately forgot his name. I met him and his girlfriend the night before at club Glam Slam. I was a college student visiting from Iowa, and they let me crash at their place. He had keyboards filling up their entire little apartment, jammin on them that night, sayin he was gonna get on stage with Prince.. I was kind of like..suuure. Next night, boom, on stage with Prince! He was tearin it up on Martial Law, and Prince seemed to be impressed.. more so than with "Bud Light" on guitar..lol. Prince's people got his contact info, but he never heard from them as far as I know. Still probably my favorite show of his I attended.. the place was electric. Great night!

Thx. It's crazy, even Pvault don't know who that guy was, and they credit "Bud Light" as "Tatoo". I wonder how these guys ended-up on stage that night. I hope one day the Estate releases the whole show on video, it was such a historic moment in P's career, and the atmosphere must have been so incredibly special.
