Prince's cloud guitar being auctioned? Has anyone else seen this upcoming auction? They are asking 100,000 for a blue cloud replica guitar. I don't know where they got that price, it appears to be nothing more than the ones sold at Paisley Park. It has the stubby headstock and all.Not sure if I am missing something here but it appears to be a scam. https://ultimateclassicro...e-auction/

I know they are a legit auction company but how do you explain the guitar that does not have the right headstock? Even if he owned this, it wasn't one that he played in public. The only other thing I could think of is that it could be the one blue one that he used from 92-2002 and they are possibly using the wrong pic. I just dont see how someone buys this for that much when it is a Shecter looking copy.

Yes this is obviously a Schecter replica. The "Ultimate Classic Rock"-Website seemingly used this image, because there is non available yet on the auction site. The 80's blue angel was LIGHT BLUE by the way (the one he played on the Lovesexy tour) NPG Radio:

More confusing details to point out:
I thought that it might be an Andy Beech cloud even though obviously to us the headstock is wrong. But, Andy himself verified that one of the three earliest clouds that he built had the short Schecter-style headstock. See below:
http://cloudguitarcentral.blogspot.com/2013/03/one-of-28.html
Maybe Andy built the first three with a short headstock?
What is also intersting is that the guitar that Andy verified as "1 of the first 3" has the "old" symbol on the fret board, but the "new" symbol on the sides.
The body is obviously not a Schecter copy due to the rear mounted pickup.
The front of the neck does not look like a Schecter copy neck because the fret markers are decals and not painted on...however, in the photo of the back of the guitar, if you look closely, the fret markers on the side of the neck are painted white, like a Schecter, and they are the "old" symbol.

Yes. I'm only guessing of course. But we all know, that the dark blue cloud came into play in 1993. So it must be the light blue one imo. And the head of the schecter cloud replica looks slightly different than Prince's original. That's where you see it at first sight. [Edited 5/6/20 9:25am] NPG Radio:

The auction is talkng about a serial number, verified with the studio list so let's go easy on the detective work.
The estate has to know what guitars they have, and if they have still guitar #1 on the studio list or not. The auction would also have to know at least some of the provenance of how this left the studio and was acquired.

It could be a wrong pic but the one the auction show does not have strings like they describe it. They also said that there is quite a bit of wear on the neck. I'm guessing the only way this is legitimate is if the headstock broke off and they replaced it with a stubby Schecter one The pics of Paisley Park taken by PD after he died reveal that a dark blue cloud was there with the rest of his guitars but I cant make out the headstock. If it is the real thing though, it's a shame that the estate is letting it go. It appears that the only real cloud in Paisley Park is the orange one that he never played publicly. You would think they would try to preserve such an iconic Prince instrument.

Had overlooked your post. Interesting! Always thought none of the original clouds had a short headstock. So, it seems I might be wrong with my theory that the Blue Angel is for sale... NPG Radio:

There was a "teal" guitar built by Andy Beech that sold for 700,000 in 2017. Apparently it was used by Prince in the late 80's and early 90's so it is possible that it was the Blue Angel. Not sure if that one had the Batman fretmarkers or was another one. This guitar is supposedly from 1984 which cannot be right, especially if it was made by Beech.

[Edited 5/7/20 0:41am] Yeah I dont know, pretty sure thats a warped photo of the Blue Angel during Lovesexy era. The headstock looks bad but it appears to still have a longer tip than the one being auctioned. The one from 1990 was the one with the Batman fret markers, not sure if it was a different guitar from the Lovesexy tour.

The main differences I can see are the pickups and frets during whatever period he was wearing both red suits, and polka dots (just before Batman, or Batman era).

There is a pic online of his guitar collection around 89-90. It displays three cloud guitars: the black, peach and Blue Angel. Not sure he had a second blue cloud during the Lovesexy tour. He would alternate his peach one with the blue. The blue angel in the pic has the batman fret markers which leads me to believe it was the same one he used during Lovesexy with replaced markers.

Interesting that the blue cloud in this Paisley Park storage pic has a stubby headstock like the one being auctioned. However it has dot fret markers, not his symbol.

Astonishingly, the guitar on auction appears to be one of the original four Clouds: https://www.rollingstone....n-1002152/ © Bart Van Hemelen

Well this is the info we have been looking for for more than 20 years now. Incredible. The dark blue guitar he used after the 1992-93 era must have been a copy because the one he last used during ONA tour in 2002 does not have a stubby headstock. Crazy that Schecter would reproduce a broken headstock, no one there noticed it didnt look like the one Prince was playing? It is also curious that a guitar so historical and iconic would not remain at Paisley Park. Will the Honer be up for auction next?

I guess I just don't get it, because even if I had that kind of money to spend on a guitar once played or owned by Prince, why would I want to? I mean, it's not like Prince himself is going to magically appear and strum the thing! To me, all it would be is a $100,000 dust collector that you could brag about owning on social media, and showing off to others.....I guess some might get some sort of thrill out of that, but it doesn't do a thing for me. In the end, these things are meaningless, I guess that's why you can't take them with you when you die.
