Around The World In A Day - 35 Years Old

2018 thread

Around the World in a Day is the seventh studio album by American recording artist Prince, and the third to feature his backing band The Revolution. It was released on April 22, 1985, by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. Departing somewhat from the commercial sound of his previous release, the massively successful Purple Rain (1984), the album instead saw Prince experimenting with psychedelic styles and more opulent textures. In compliance with Prince's wishes, the record company released the album with minimal publicity, withholding accompanying singles until almost a month after the album's release.

Around the World in a Day was released to notably mixed reception after the success of Purple Rain, though it nonetheless sold relatively well and became Prince and the Revolution's second number-one album on the Billboard 200. Two of its four singles reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100: "Raspberry Beret" and "Pop Life". Following Prince's death, "Raspberry Beret" re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 as a top 40 hit, reaching number 33. Around the World in a Day was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on July 2, 1985.

How time flies. Bought the vinyl on release date. I remember hearing the title track for the first time and I knew it was something different from any Prince album he released to date. I didn’t know what to think of it at first but definitely grew on me.

Great article. A good album that could have been much better if Hello, She's Alway In My Hair, Girl and 4 The Tears in Your Eyes.

Well, it is what it is, and it's perfect.

Someone on here once put up their expanded version playlist. I use it a lot.

Thanks for reading the article. I should go back and edit to suggest the b-sides.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Or also John Cusack, which is funny because Susannah M had a long relationship with him, AND this album cover is shown in a scene of his film High Fidelity biggrin

goodness thanks they didnt use that original cover eek

it's a great album in retrospect, just a shame of those two closing tracks.

Leave the B-sides where they are children. Why would you want to take those mighty b-sides and turn them into 'just another song'?
It did need two totally other songs instead. But the rest of the album is criminally good.

Sure i didnt like it directly after PR, but it's a grower and in the end, growers are stronger than instant hits.

Never understood why ATWIAD wasn't a single though.

I found the extended playlist someone from the Org created, that I still use.

  • Around The World In A Day (#1)
  • Paisley Park (Remix)
  • Condition of the Heart
  • She's Always In My Hair (New Mix)
  • Hello (Fresh Dance Mix)
  • 4 The Tears In Your Eyes
  • Raspberry Beret (New Mix)
  • Girl
  • Tamborine
  • America (Long Version)
  • Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix)
  • The Ladder
  • Temptation (my edit, which cuts out the talking-to-God ending - fite me)

Aside from the last one, it's a good version of an expanded edition. That #1 for ATWIAD is the one with bass in it, and clocks around 5:55.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

For years my absolute unwavering favorite Prince album.
.
Because it was the first one I got on day-of-release. So it held great personal resonance for me.
.
Still such a remarkable album with mostly great songs.
I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Do most people prefer the Fresh Dance Mix of "Pop Life" over the extended version?

I mean, it was one guy who came up with it, so - I don't know? Insert whichever one you love the most and go with it.

LOL! Nice "connection" to today's mess though. I think the older man, who appears to have a slight smile, is just weary and ready to climb "the ladder" smile

After '1999' and the RAIN, 'Around The World In A Day' hooked me forever.

Jill Jones stated that when she had a conversation with Prince about the album cover back when it was released, and he told her that she was the girl crying, she said she asked him if he was the guy in the cloud suit and he said no. She said she then asked where he is on the album cover, and he said, "I'm gone. I already went up the ladder."
