Does Lavaux sound like Shake your Body?

Ever since I heard Lavaux I cant shake the feeling that the riff in the chorus sounds like the bassline in Shake your Body. I don't know, wanted to get your opinion.

Yes, and he was playing Shake Your Body live around that time period as well so perhaps it evolved from jamming on it? Having said that, if it's a lift of anything it's Automatic by the Pointer Sisters.

Knowing Prince and the way he could fancy petty revenges over little things sometimes, it could have been intentional, as in "they stole the title of one of my songs, I'm gonna steal the groove of theirs" lol But I guess we'll never know unless he told an associate at the time.

Except you can't copyright the title of a song, so there's nothing to "steal." Prince certainly had some distinctive song titles, but "Automatic" wasn't one of 'em.

On point: I can see where people hear "Shake Your Body" in "Lavaux." And perhaps it's possible because he was playing that a lot on the Prince 20Ten Tour. (Wasn't he mixing it with "Mountains?") But the "Automatic" reference from Pointer Sisters seems more...pointed. (See what I did there?!)

One wonders if the guys who wrote "Automatic" didn't take a shine from "Shake Your Body" first.

"Automatic" and "Dance Electric"... something fishy about this.

Oh yeah true I'd forgotten about Dance Electric. Yeah, that one is even more obvious, so maybe P took his revenge twice lol lol lol

Dance Electric was written, recorded and released before Prince at least recorded his own The Dance Electric.

The entire Contact album is heavily influenced by Prince 1999 album for sure though.

Yeah that's what we're saying, P's Dance Electric = retatliation for Pointer Sisters' Automatic. Which is on Break Out BTW not contact, but I haven't heard Contact yet so it's probably just as much a child of 1999.

it's also worth noting that the Pointer Sisters covered Prince's "I Feel For You" in 1982 biggrin

Very fishy. What was going on between Prince and the Pointer Sisters?

PS covered "I feel for you" on "So Excited!" released July 82.

Prince releases "Automatic" on 1999 on October 82.

PS release "Automatic" and "Dance Electric" on "Breakout" Nov. 83.

Andre Cymone releases "The Dance Electric" July 85.
