You're not lying though. Did he know how good the song was? Or was he just too occupied with creating new music and lost this track in the mix. Maybe he thought "It's just a song, nothing spectacular. Now listen to this instead Lisa, I call it Christopher Tracy's Parade. THAT is something special."

Great song, the best along with I Wanna Be Your Lover from that record. For me, I would vote for Do U Lie. Love the whimsical feel of the song, and fits so well on Parade, with that French theme running through it.
I would also say Lady Cab Driver (as one of my very favourite Prince songs) but I don't think that is overrated somehow.

Hello- Phase3 said: "I'm yours"The guitar playing throughout is extraordinary.I wish he would have performed in concert but I dont think he ever has. We have a winner! And he did play it, at L.A. Live live back in 2009, on that 3 concerts in one night. The rockcentric club concert. Yep I was there at the conga room & I was probably only a handful of people that recognized it, I was yelling for the trio to play the Undertaker in between songs but to no avail. Great night i'll never forget.

I recall reading somewhere that Wendy & Lisa said they tried guiding Prince in new directions, advising him against things that sounded "too Purple Rain." SAIMH, recorded in 1983, definitely sounds more PR than Around the World in a Day: no classical instruments or abstract lyrics, the flanged hi-hats sound like "Sex Shooter," and the piano chord rhythms sound like "The Beautiful Ones." I agree it probably could have been a big single, it's better than "Tamborine" and more accessible than much of ATWIAD, but Prince was "looking for the ladder," so to speak.

“The world’s most famous underground artist,” that’s apt. He really did reward those who worked to find the hidden gems.

Two that are in some way are similar in that it is Prince at his most idealistic/dreamiest, The Ladder and Free. I know these and other songs in a similar vein got slammed by many here, but it is one facet of Prince that I appreciate as it adds another dimension to his music. Only Prince could go from purely sexual to upliftinng in consecutive songs. I agree with those who don't believe Free fit well into 1999, but the songs itself is one I really like.
One song that most people seem to like but not love is Uptown. To me, it is as good as any of his songs on his first 4 albums. It is so funky and fun to sing along well. Who can resist rhyming Puerto Riccan with freakin! I, for one, can't. A piano only version of the ladder without such a long spoken word portion and more tuneful verses would have been masterful...it is too meandering and over instrumented to be mainstream...

I'm gonna go with songs that should have charted or charted higher..irrespective of being singles or not:
1. Gotta broken heart again and When you were mine. 2. Private joy and controversy. 3. Automatic and lady cab driver 4. Purple Rain ( should have been no 1) and Beautiful Ones. 5. Paisley Park and Shes Always in my Hair 6. Desire and Mutiny 7. Starfish and Coffee, Adore, If I was Your Girlfriend, Its Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, It 8. Cindy C, Good Love, Bob George (a hip hop remix by Dr Dre or Ice Cube could have killed) 9. Eye No, Anna Stesia, When 2 R in Love. -->Glam slam and eye Wish You Heaven charted badly but both songs feel unfinished somehow though both have great melodies. 10.Vicky Waiting, Trust 11. Elephants and Flowers, New Power Generation (pt1..pt2 not so much) and Still Would Stand All Time [Edited 3/28/20 1:46am]

Pop Life. But apparently it was a bop at the time of its release so maybe it's not underrated We are the flowers growin' in God's garden
And that is why he spreads the shit around

Agree with all of them, I have always wondered, how come PR never made it to the top, it has everything to become a number one single.

I was there too! The power trio of Prince, Sonny, and Michael B is one of my all-time favorite shows. Opening with "I'm Yours"??? Are you kidding me?!! I knew we were in for a treat when he played that first! My most underrated song is, believe it or not, Sister. Such provocative lyrics, it comes out of nowhere, and rolls into Partyup effortlessly.

I can only thin that maybe these songs were too much PR like. These songs you metioned could also have been on PR (my opnion)
He also didn't want to continue the whole fame thing, so a song "generating a ton of buzz" wasnt his intention at tha time.

Peru? are you for real? do they even know Prince in Peru? I never heard his music when I was there. I did hear The Beatles a lot. In the Barranca neighbourhood in Lima, I noticed a wall with paintings of rock stars on it. Bob Dylan Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson etcetera. No Prince. If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.
