I've been listening to this album, 'Come' a lot lately. I think it is one of his best.
.
You may personally LIKE the songs on this grotesquerie, of course. Heck, I LIKE some of these songs ("Papa" and "Dark" are the two champs).
.
But one thing it cannot possibly be is "one of his best." There is a world of difference between a personal "favorite" and an objective "best."
Solo, Letitgo, Pheremone too. All of them actually.
There is no "objective" in determining "best". It is all "subjective". So your preference is just as valid as mine.
Unless you use "objective" things like sales count as "best". Then we are talking about Purple Rain.
I guess, I'm coming (no pun intended) from the perspective that all Prince music was him trying to communicate something, and not necessarily to his audience. I understand this album from the perspective of what he was trying to communicate with this album. That is why I consider it one of his best.
I was prepared not to like this album. But I did what Prince did. I got in my car in the middle of the night and drove around listening to it over and over. That is how I came to like it.
But I repect your opinion.

^^^^THIS...even though n time it has recieved more recognition for the matarieal, but overall, this was a terrible release with lackluster material (as you stated) at the time. Which made GOLD so refreshing after this. "Climb in my fur." |

As for Bobby Brown, the song the other poster was reminded of was "on Our Own" from Ghostbusters 2.
See, what you have there regarding the Come album is an opinion. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinions. But you seem to be presenting it as fact. I happen to think your opinion is a literary skidmark, but I'll present it as an opinion and respect your opinion as such. (I love the Come album by the way. Apparently "sonic skidmark" is a new genre that I need to explore.)
I like the Come album also... |

The Gold Experience is the shit album.
Come was brilliant.
All three parties--Prince, WB and the media marketed one of these releases as a fall-from-grace and the other as his "best work since Purple Rain" or whatever, "return to former glory" blah blah. The problem is people latching on to that intentional marketing designation as absolute fact. Come aged like fine wine and Gold aged like sour milk... Prince merely turning on his distortion pedal does not make a good album. I don't care what you all felt in 1994. In 2020 after the dust has settled, Come is the superior release, hands-down. Those are the best songs on the album, but the album is very cohesive sonically speaking. What's My Name is part of these sessions? |

'Gold' has certainly not aged well at all. "Shit album" is stretching the point.

But 'Come,' that album is an insult to his fanbase, and an unfortunate stain on his legacy. It's a real turning point in his career. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here. |

Nah. Disagree. I was blasting the shit out of Come in my car stereo back in the 90's . The Gold Experience sucks.

I picked up on the link to Deacon Blue many years ago, not for the music but the lyrics: -
"...I cried when I wrote this song, sue me if I play too long..."
"...I was dreamin' when I wrote this,
so sue me if I go too fast..."
I've always loved Steely Dan, and always thought Prince would have dug them too. Brilliant prog rock/jazz fusion band.

Do you mean another song? These lyrics are not from LetItGo. There are lyrics somewhat like this at the beginning of 1999. Is that what you mean?
"I was dreamin' when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray..." 1999
There could be some borrowing from Steely Dan. I find with Prince borrow usually had a purpose. Maybe he was trying to reference the Steel Dan song for some reason.

Yes, not to Letitgo, but 1999. Those are the lines from the 2nd verse...very similar to the lines in Deacon Blue really, same structure and pattern and close with the meaning. Just swap crying for dreaming, and too long for too fast. |

Eh I already tackled this "point" in my post awhile back... you're just proving that his intentional marketing (which only existed to hulk up his upcoming symbol-debut Gold) dictated fans perspective before they ever heard the opening notes of Come.
Come was like the last Prince album I ever heard because all the reviews/mentions are exactly like yours--bursting with grandstanding hyperbolic declarations of mediocity without once making specific mention to any actual sounds or music or why it's so inferior to his other work musically. The only typical talking-point you missed was highlighting the cover art... again, another "musical" perspective. [Edited 3/16/20 1:24am] |

All those who disliked Come the album and saying Prince did not care about the album. He was performing Trax from the Come Album like crazy. Check those live performances the songs he performed
Come Space Loose Dark Race Pappa etc as well as the Gold Experience Trax and alot of other songs from that era. |

You're right in the sense that Prince clearly saw Come as slapped together and "more of the same", whilst The Gold Experience was supposed to be a break with the past, both in style and production. But as fans we're not obliged to see things the way Prince did. For example, Prince presumably thought Graffiti Bridge was a good film, yet I don't see many people here defending it.
Maybe it's true that The Gold Experience is the more significant album because of what it represents, but that doesn't change the fact that I prefer Come. The Gold Experience sounds overproduced and cheesy nowadays (the production improved on Emancipation, though it was still a bit much). As an album opener, P Control is perhaps more 'interesting' than Come, both thematically ("Prince does feminism") and because he'd never begun a record with a track based purely on rap, but it's fair to say that Come is the more complex and competently-executed piece. And the truth is that, for an album that Prince saw as uninspired and throwaway, Pheromone, Space and Solo at the very least are all songs that sound remarkably different from everything he'd done before. To clarify, I don't hate The Gold Experience -in fact I like quite a few of the songs, and love a couple of them-, but you get what I'm trying to say.
