"I Wanna Be Your Lover" Deep Dive Analysis on New Eighties Site

https://rchallen.wixsite....your-lover

Full disclosure: This is my site, and I'm doing all the writing and content. The (objectively insane) goal is to write about EVERY single song that hit the Top 40 during the decade of the 1980s. SO this is obviously the first Prince song... but not the last. (Although it's gonna be the last for quite some time, since he basically went hitless for over two years after this single.)

While I can't compete with a lot of you on the fan level, Prince remains one of my favorite artists of all time, and I was absolutely obsessed with him for most of the decade. So it's a bit tricky to write about someone whose music means that much to you and not have the whole piece devolve into fanboy worship. But I think I (mostly) got there.

Please check it out if you have time! (It's officially a "6 min read.") And browse the rest of the site if you like what you read. I've already noticed a disturbing trend that entries from non-white artists (besides MJ) are getting about half the views overall, so I'd prefer to get a more diverse audience hitting my site as it continues.

Thanks in advance! I'm on this forum quite a bit even though I'm lurking 99% of the time...

Rich

Prince's birthday is June 7, not June 5.

You also failed to mentioned Gayle Chapman being in the band. Weird omission.

Also, I'm unclear why being 21 would have garnered him a different record that him being 19. I think all his records were playful up to Purple Rain (when he was more focused on a specific outcome). No one's exactly grown at 21. The comparison just felt random with no real backup on why 21 is different than 19 when recording a record. Just a thought.

PS You may consider publishing your work on Medium. You can get more views there, and be part of the community as well as the member profit sharing. I've made a few bucks on there from my articles so far (although it's not why I signed up). I'm not sure if you can embed Medium onto your Wix page, but it's worth looking into maybe.

Good luck. You have a huge task ahead of you.

I was gonna stay away from that, but you went there. And frankly, I appreciate it. The fact that the genesis of "I Hate U" is in "Baby" makes it far from stillborn. That's not to mention the pure acoustic silky perfection that is "Crazy You."

I can almost see the Sgt. Pepper's comparisons for "Raspberry Beret" or "Pop Life" from here.

In fairness, I wasn't that into For You for a very long time. I never picked up on it until someone pointed it out. The Gold Experience is probably my favorite 90s album; it's the 90's version of Purple Rain, to me. But I love it because it's rock oriented, and I love when black artists do rock music.

The pisser is he only does that fill one time in the whole song of "Baby." It doesn't feel random, but to go back and pick one element to reuse - that?? It's pretty genius.
