Prince's father was 42 years old when Prince was born. Does that surprise you? Of course, having older parents is not uncommon. My parents were 38 when when I was born, and 40 when my sister was born. I just did some maths and realised that Prince's dad was 42 at his son's birth. So it means when Prince did Purple Rain at age 25/26, his father was nearing 70. Of course, nothing wrong or uncommon with that. It just makes me wonder how Prince dealt with older/ ageing parents and how it influenced his upbringing and adult views of families, marriages and relationships. |

Having been born to parents who were in their late 30's I can say that it did have an impact on my upbringing. I was the 5th child and the last so by the time I came around my parents had already 'been there, done that' so there wasn't alot of energy put into school functions/activities. They divorced when I was about 6 or 7 (cheating father) so that also had an impact on me. From what I understand Prince's relationship with his father was very complex and volatile at times. | |

My mom was almost 41 and my dad was 52 when I was born so no, not much of a surprise here. | |

My parents were 34 and 31 when I was born, I was the last child they had, so it doesn't surprise me. | |

His mom was 25, though and his dad seemed very fit and did not seem to have any vices. He looked like a "young" 42 to me. | |

It doesn’t surprise me. But yeah, it certainly can have an impact. My parents were in their mid-40s when I arrived. Sometimes it seemed that Prince was looking for women to mold into what he wanted them to be... which is the same feeling I got from reading what he wrote about his parents. Father was older, dignified, worldly, steady, religious while mother was young, beautiful, willful, full of life... but if only she would have allowed herself to grow into what his father wanted/needed then maybe the marriage would have survived. Opposites attract but sometimes that relationship isn’t the best example to copy. | |

42 years old, and also a working musician, so in those days that would make for a less traditional parent anyway. | |

No it doesn't surprise me but it might help in understanding why he dated & married younger women as he got older. He really loved & admired his Momma. The kind of love that takes over your body, mind, & soul | |
