Your favourite song of each decade

I was giving this some thought the other night, thinking it would be an easy exercise. How wrong was I?

.

So what is your Prince favourite song of each decade and why? Here's mine......

.

1970s

I'm Yours - that guitar solo just blows my mind and is a precursor of things to come.

.

1980s

Crystal Ball - epic, absolute genius. To say this is a one man band recording is phenomenal. To keep this in the vault for 11 years and then only release it on the hodgepodge outtakes album, largely ignored by the public is the crime of the century.

.

1990s

Endorphinmachine - this track is just banging! In my opinion this era is the best line up of the NPG and just love how Prince pushes everything to the max with this song.

.

2000s

3121 - what a groove, I could listen to this all day. After the somewhat mainstream Musicology, this was back to a more experimental track and hearing this live at the O2 after show in London was a life highlight for me cool

.

2010s

Breakdown - in my opinion his best ballad for almost 20 years (since I Hate U). This feels a very reflective song and the lyrics really draw you in. Whilst some strong tracks followed, I see this as his last original masterpiece.

1970s
In love - such a cheery song
Iwbyl- who doesn’t want to dance when they hear this

1980s
Lovesexy - it’s all one long track! I’ve forever adored it.
If we’re not allowed lovesexy, computer blue.
Lovesexy was so creative and computer blue is so driven.

1990s
TMBGITW or Come (title track) cannot choose between the love song of love songs or the most hypnotic prince song ever written

2000s
Judas smile - the solo the solo the solo
She loves me for me - gorgeously pretty

2010s
Wow - 3eg and Prince, absolute magic.
This could be us - so beautiful

OP - your 80s 90s and 10s picks we’re close seconds to mine.

Computer Blue definitely in my Top 5 80s. That decade was the hardest to choose!

.

Judas Smile is an off the wall choice for the 00s. I'll have to revisit that one......

a

1970s: Soft and Wet.
Because this is where it all began, Prince's unique blend of sex 'n soul.
1980s: 1999
Sums up the zeitgeist of the Cold War and the fear of "the bomb" perfectly. It is easy to forget nowadays that the threat of a nuclear war was or at least seemed to be very real back then, so what else can you do but dance your life away?
1990s: Days of Wild
What this decade was all about for Prince musically was figuring out how to deal with hip hop. He got it wrong lots of times (hello, Tony M!), here he got it right.
2000s: 3121
I agree with Harps, this track proved that he could still come up with a monster of a funk groove. Spare me all the preaching and the pseudo jazz, just give up the funk!
2010s: Way Back Home
It had been a long time since he wrote something as deep and personal as that.

70's Bambi
80's Joy In Repetition
90's Days of Wild
00's PFUNK
10's Way Back Home

This list could change for me tomorrow though and I just spitballed it.

Happy to see some love for Judas Smile. Thought I was the only one that liked that song.

Very smooth selection. When Doves Cry sticks out a bit in terms of style, but when it's such a masterpiece, it's understandable lol

70s: for you. What a way to start the first album of a great career
80s: darling nikki. So unique who else could have done this?
90s: love to the 9s. Great arrangement. And the rap part does reflect the 90s, like it or not. Close call with strange but true
00s: the word. Just love it, the vibe.
10s: way back home. Snif snif. Close call with hard rock lover.

70s
Just As Long As We're Together (That Jelly Jam coda is the bomb. So much promise.)

80s
When You Were Mine (My favorite Prince song of all time.)

90s

Space (The acoustic version - though Universal Love is pretty damn good, too.)

00s

The Dance (This was a tough choice. I don't think it's his best song of this decade, but I like how the two versions "bookend" his relationship with M2. We got to peer into his heart on this one.)

10s

Way Back Home (Like a dagger to my heart.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I'm not even going to attempt to single out a favourite song from the 80s but man, the opening drum machine part on the full version sends chills down my spine every time.

Love your choice of Revelation. I was stunned that it didn't rank high in Moonbeam's song poll. A stunner that sounds like no other Prince song. It was one of the late in life songs that suggested that the 2010s had the potential to be a special era for him.

Was a bit resistent to this just because it is near impossible to pick just one from the 80s but here it goes.

1970s I Wanna Be Your Lover

1980s When Doves Cry (best song but not one I am into as much now due to over-exposure)

1990s Beautiful Strange

2000s When I Lay My Hands on You

2010s Way Back Home
