"The One" Mixed messages?

When ever I hear "The One" I am struck by two lines that give huge mixed messages...

one is

And if u're lookin' 4 a man that'll have 10 women
And confuse it all with his wealth

So he may have 10 woman but he keeps it in perspective?

and then

Place u, place u above all others

When it comes, when it comes 2 the gettin' on down

So he will 'get down' with others if she isn't around?

I’m not sure if there are different versions but the Lyrics I found said that when it comes to the gettin down, he’d put her above all others.
It also ends by saying “My, my little Mayte.” But I don’t hear that on the recording.

Above all others... not only her... I like coke above all other sodas but if I can not find one a Sprite will do

The One

The New Power Generation

If you're lookin for the man that will
Walk away, from responsibility
I ain't the one (I ain't the one)
(I ain't the one)
And if you're lookin' for the brotha that'll treat
You like anything, but a Queen
I ain't the one

But if you're lookin' for a man that'll
Sweep you off your tired, weary feet
Pay your bills, buy you pretty dresses
And take you anywhere you wanna eat
Make love to you every night of the week
Oh, don't think it over, girl

Look no further
I am the one
Oh yes I am

If you're lookin' for a man that'll make
Big money, and keep it all to himself
I ain't the one
No, no - not me

And if you're lookin' for a man that'll have 10 women
And confuse it all, with his wealth
Listen here, I ain't that one
No, no no - wait a minute

If you lookin' for a man who can share his dinero (his money)
Buy you half the town (half the town)
Treat every step you take (every step)
As if you're walkin', huh, on holy ground (holy ground)
Place you, place you above all others
When it comes, when it comes to the gettin' on down (down)
Look no further, ooh
Your man's around (he's around)
Oh yes he is

He's standing right here, right here (right here, right here)
Don't you look no further, girl
He's standing right here, right here

(I am the one)
(I am the one)

If you're lookin' for a man that'll make
You feel like time has just begun (Ooh)
A man that'll make you feel like you're
The only thing that ever mattered
Underneath the sun, underneath the sun (Ooh!)
If you're lookin' for somebody
Who will turn your bad day into one long night of fun
Look no further, baby
I'm (I-- I-- I--) I'm the one

Oh yes I am
I am the one
Don't you look no further, girl
Oh, I am the one
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh
My, my, my little Mayte
I'm the one

It makes perfect sense to me. He says he isn't the kind of man that will have 10 women. He then says that he'll regard her higher than any other person. In other words, he'll only have sex with her.

the key word is AND I will not have 10 woman and confuse it with my wealth.. so i may have other woman but I am not going to also confuse it with my wealth...

and the other part:

Place u, place u above all others

When it comes, when it comes 2 the gettin' on down

So you are 1st but there may be others too...

I don’t think Prince meant to hurt anyone. I think he loved women too much for that.
I believe he had a lot of beautiful women around him, he deserved to have that if he liked it especially when he was younger, and I as well believe that he was afraid of being alone, or of ending up alone, and therefore had more than one woman around him at one time.
The special one who knew she could handle that and didn’t care.

I do get what you're saying, and I was making a joke that Prince was often allegedly seeing many women at a time hence the end of some of his relationships.

But in truth, I think you are reading into the lyrics like a lawyer, but I don't think Prince was intending them to have that kind of hard logic applied. If he was, then he was even more of a pop music genius than I thought, because on the surface the lyric would be implying monogamy, but then underneath it was actually the opposite when inspected.

But hey, I think many people are completely misreading statements in politics by scraping too deep to present the opposite meaning in their minds than what is actually intended.

I don't think there is anything confusing here, he is not contradicting himself at all.

the first line is not saying he MAY have 10 women, it is saying if you are looking for a man that would have 10 women, he is NOT the one.

the second line is merely saying that the person the lyric is meant for, is the only woman he would have sex with.

Both lines have a monogomous meaning, and in that respect, I would say, no contradiction between the two, but rather, confirmation instead.

Maybe,

"And if u're lookin' 4 a man that'll have 10 women
And confuse it all with his wealth"

means he won't objectify women. A man who confuses having 10 women with his wealth views women as a commodity, an asset (in the economic sense). Of course, I guess, to interpret this requires interpretting what he means by 'wealth'.

It's clear Prince didn't care who he hurt because he exhibited the same pattern for DECADES. Dishonesty, cheating, lying is abuse and hardly treating someone like a "queen". Also, the entire song is essentially about buying women/things, which is a great innsight into his minndset (aka that of prostituion and objectification). Newsflash: love is not about superficial things that can be bought or dishonesty.

People don't seem to comprehend that the whole "muse" model historically is sexist Patriarchal and blatant Narc abuse.

As far as him having and wanting "beautiful" women, he was attracted to young girls/women whom he could control and reshape in an image HE made (based primarily on a porn sick image of women). To say the vast majority of the girls/women he was with were physically average looking and mentally/emotionally/spiritually lacking; is being kind. He guaranteed his lonliness when he chose control/power and manipulation over connection, vulnerability, honesty and equality.

Being analytical is notbeing judgemental, it is being honest. Something some people seem incapable of.

Think most of this is pretty much true. From the late 80s onwards, all his relationships with females were clearly based on his dominance and their subservience. He couldn’t connect - and who could blame him? He was Prince. He didn’t want an equal, he wanted control and power. I think he knew he was destined to die alone, in an emotional sense. He’d long since cut off anyone he’d shown vulnerability to. There were countless women and girls in his life but, reading the police case files, he was playing them all til the very end. When, really, the only person he was playing was himself. He often took the piss out of his narcissism - he was clearly acutely self aware and as much as observationist towards himself as he was to the world - but there’s always a fundamental layer of truth in any joke. A lot of P fans fantasise about him playing the Joker, but he didn’t need to play it - he was it. He was a living legend - the planet was his plaything. He tested limits, pushed boundaries of perception, broke established rules and walked alone in the path he chose. He couldn’t let his guard down, let anyone in - he was Prince. Who could possibly understand that? Who could he possibly let in to that? Who could he trust? He decided to be in a relationship with himself, in the end. His one true love.

This 'analysis' reads like a visit to Lucy's psychiatry booth. Implicit bias much? Completely rabid personal opinion: "women he was with were physically average looking and..." Followed by noble claims: "Being analytical is not being judgemental, it is being honest." One issue for me: The whole post is your opinion; and, if others disagree, then, in your opinion, they're "incapable of" being honest? Ease up!

Also, just cuz.... isn't there a 'rule' against 'shouting', e.g. all text bolded; or all caps?

Not that you asked but, just an opinion! I think your observation about the concept of the "muse" model is interesting. But, nestled in the rest of the diatribe, that point gets lost.

If you understand anything about the historical and ancient meaning of "muses" "star of muses" etc etc and all the variations in ancient cultures, you know that the current modern day concept of a "muse" is a patriarchal reversal of power.

That is the truly laughable irony in the "muses" Prince always selected and that is why it is even funnier (as if they are capable of his abilities). In other words, I'm probably not explaining it well here because it is a deep and complex subject.

Also, if you can't see that making someone an object to be merely for the use of another who is the actual creator of somethinng (instead of that person being the individual to create for themselves) is narc. objectification; I don't know what else to say.

I believe that when Prince was really into a mentee/muse, even in lust or love with them, he wanted to look like them. That’s how much he deeply loved women and his own feminine side. Look at what he did to look like Esperanza Spaulding, Andy Allo and Tamar. He says in “1,000 Lifht Years Away” that there’s “nothing better than looking in the mirror and seeing you.”
Prince was an enigma. In touch with both sides of himself which we all have - but he was clean enough mentally and spiritually to connect to that other side of him. I think there’s a lot to him that people do not understand.
Yes he had a strong ego. And yes he protected himself - and WELL.
And thank God. Because almost human beings are for sale, and will turn on you in an instant if they can steal your Power.

Oh, I think you have FAR more than one issue dear. Disagreement is a healthy & nec. form of communication and understanding to advance concepts. Unfortunately, you chose not to do that here but instead attempt to attack and insult me. Always the sign of mental weakness and that you've allready/are lost.

What's analytical about saying the "girls/women he was with were physically average looking"? That's a subjective opinion.

I apologize if I attacked or insulted you.

Also, I didn't realize it was a contest. I thought it was a discussion. If you were looking for a fight, you can have the trophy.

you get what I am saying? That he is telling her he's going to sleep with other woman.

So Prince was famous for being monogamous?
I am confused. He said if you want to know about me listen to my music. There it is.

So Prince was famous for being monogamous? Isn’t around.
I am confused. He said if you want to know about me listen to my music. There it is. Remember Prince didn’t like friends, band member or even a Melvoin sister talking about to his current main thang when he ain’t around. All of Prince’s women understood not to show up unexpected.

@KaliD, I’d still like to know who you are, a new poster, coming here and stirring up trouble and making claims that Prince was the awful things you said.
What is your personal beef with him?
