Why is Purple Rain presented in the album version rather than the single version on 4Ever?

Also contributes to the issue of Partyman (most likely the album version, not the radio edit starting from Camilie's first line) being excluded despite being "that other hit" from the Batman soundtrack. Purple Rain with the painfully long guitar solo at the end is the perfect album closer, as shown on The Hits 2 and the original Purple Rain OST but not anywhere else. The single version (I think) fades before the guitar solo so I think it could've worked on here better. The sole "official" unremastered release of this sole edit was the Crown Jewels CD promo, which is very hard to come across so it could've been in a similar quality if included.

I hate when the songs are edited.

I kind of prefer edits when we're talking compilations. I mean you're already "editing" down their overall oeuvre, "editing" down from their proper albums / original intent... at that point might as well edit as much as possible to fit maximum tracks possible. I figure if one wants the "full" versions, go with the "full" albums.

Because it's a bad compilation full of inconsistencies.

SInce when is "Purple Rain" a "painfully long guitar solo?" What the actual fuck?

Noobs. disbelief

"Purple Rain" is one of those songs that almost feels pointless without the guitar solo and ending. Not that the first half is bad, because the way the strings and vocal harmonies gradually come in is still beautiful, but it's all just buildup. Without the cathartic payoff of the solo and vocal hook, it's just a repetitive pop ballad.

OP's point that throwing in Purple Rain in the middle of a compilation makes for a weird listen is a good one though.

It's a repetitive pop ballad even if he added another six guitar solos.

I agree with this. It also gets a little boring listening to the same version of a song over and over.

Just researched and found out that disc 1 of 4Ever ends with Purple Rain. The Partyman exclusion is another story, but it's best to not have TMBGITW than anything it all cause despite people referring it as a Warner-era song, he released it on NPG Records and all. Also the lawsuit

LOL I fucking have the album and I forgot that, that's how often I play this album. Was getting it mixed up with the tracklist on The Very Best of Prince.

Marketing!

Since April 2016 it is the only Prince track that is used to market and sell his legacy!

Constantly we hear purple this and purple that! Even vinyl pressings are in [the wrong] bloomin' purple!

Including the longer version highlights it's gravitas.

However, Prince's music spanned FIVE decade, so it's time for people to get their heads out of 1984!

cool

I've always though the guitar solo is too low in the mix on the album version. Thus, if I had to choose between listening to the full album version and the album edit, I'd pick the edit.

If I want to hear the guitar solo, I'd pick a live version of Purple Rain from later in his career, where the guitar is loud in the mix and the solo is more fleshed out.

What is going on around here? Have people suddenly forgotten how to listen?

Suddenly Purple Rain is this flawed track that's a repetitive and badly mixed pop single?

Fucking hell. The album version of the song is included because it's at the end of the disc and it is the definitive version of the song. This is not rocket science. Why are people so fucking dumb?

Do people even have brains anymore?

Edited several times because I was so incensed by people's fucking stupidity I forgot how to type.

We're over "Purple Rain." You can have it. Long version, short version, half version, snippet, sample, fragment... Album version, single version, video version, edited, greatest hits, best-of, the very best-of. All yours.

I'm all for edits on compilations. But I'm in agreement with you on Purple Rain. It always needs to be heard in its full glory.

The version on The Crown Jewels is the 7" single version. Definitely not exclusive to that compilation.

Rather than spending all that time editing and re-editing your post, you should have devoted a couple minutes to more closley reading mine. My post had nothing to do with whether the album version should have gone on the compilation. My post had nothing to do with whether or not the song is repetivite. My only comment is that the guitar is too low in the mix, thus I prefer live versions. With that in mind, directing your response at me made zero sense.
