"Nothing Compares 2 U" is one of Q Magazine's "The 112 Greatest Love Songs Of The Last 60 Years (1960-2020)"

From the April 2020 issue of UK music monthly Q Magazine:

.

The 112 Greatest Love Songs Of The Last 60 Years (1960-2020)

.
Whether in passion’s full bloom or tumbling into a pit of despair, those who are love-struck always require a song to describe their emotional state. Luckily, those songs exist. On the eve of Valentine’s Day 2020, we asked the expert Q writing team, as well as our readers, to nominate the greatest love songs of the last 60 years, decade by decade. These songs will save your life.

.
Nothing Compares 2 U -- Sinéad O’Connor (1990)

.

The Irish singer turned this Prince outtake into an anguished ballad which is all the more stark by the absence of a bass track, the tale going that producer Nellee Hooper forgot to add it when he sent it to be mastered.

I never liked the Sinead O'Connor version. Long before I even knew who Prince was, I hated that song. Then I heard the Prince version with the saxophone solo and everything and it clicked. I wouldn't personally put it anywhere near my list of all time best love songs though.

Back in the day, this version would make my godmother burst into tears every time she heard it. Songs can have so much power.

One of the few Prince-penned songs my mother has any time for as well, she loves the Sinead O'Connor version so much.

This song always puts me to sleep after the first line, which admittedly is a pretty stellar opening to a song. All versions.

Meander City, can't you see?

Adore, Pink Cashmere is so much better. In composition and execution. Is there really no Prince song (performed by him) on that list?!

That's what I thought. I'm suddenly realizing that none of his chart-toppers were love songs (unless "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" counts), and most of his big hits weren't love songs. As album cuts, they're less recognizable for a list like this. I suppose it's a compliment to Prince that he tried not to be pinned down by these labels. Would "Joy in Repetition" make this list? Of course not. Why? It's too good. Ditto a more popular song like "I Would Die 4 U."
