Have you ever liked a side project better than a PRINCE album? I'll admit back in the day to liking the Time albums and the Appolonia 6 album better than Purple Rain, which came across as pretty "thin" sounding after 1999.
But then again, Ice Cream Castles was also pretty "thin" sounding compared to the two albums that came before it (though I still really liked it).

I think Exodus is a better album than Come Check out The Collector's Guide to Prince on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/p...4ldzxwlEuy

Definitely Mazarati, I liked it much more than the albums that came out during the NPG/jazz/horns Prince era (I'll never forget the disappointment when I first heard Rainbow Children). Does "New Power Soul" count as a side project? Because I like it way better than a lot of Prince albums.

1991 Eric Leeds: "Times Squared" better than "Diamonds & Pearls" IMO NPG Radio:

I'd even go so far to say, Exodus is better than Come and better than The Gold Experience, too.

Good shout, this...odd one, too, considering how close Times Squared veers towards Kenny G-land, at times.

Yeah I'd agree with you there actually. In fact, it's probably my favourite Prince-related album of the 90s Check out The Collector's Guide to Prince on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/p...4ldzxwlEuy

It's pretty spectacular, yes.

I like the first 3 Time albums more than the majority of Prince's own albums so I'd say yes. Unless you're comparing side projects and Prince albums that were released around the same time? In which case I'd say no.

Hmmm. No, not an entire album. Maybe singles from the same year. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Definitely The Family, I can still play this today without it sounding dated at any point.

I like The Time's Pandemonium--the first true collaborative effort between Prince and the guys pictured on the actual cover--a lot more than the companion Graffiti Bridge. And more than most of Prince's own albums too.

I have to admit....in 1986,I was enjoying the Mazarati album alot more than Prince's Parade.
Mazarati had that Minneapolis funk that I was craving, while the music on Parade was more complex/artistic.I just wanted to party and have fun, lol.

Exodus. Nothing i dont like on the album. Except for the soup segue... Always good to play loud if you are having a bad day and unable to vent your frustrations.... This is what it's like in the dream factory...

I personally think The Exodus Has Begun is the best song he released in the 90s. I know it's a shameless Funkadelic ripoff but it's a hell of a lot of fun Check out The Collector's Guide to Prince on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/p...4ldzxwlEuy

If it were songs instead of albums, definitely.

Definitely The Family project was heavy in rotation during a pivotal time in my life. The songs both lyrically and musically soothed my soul during my college years. To this day all goes silent when that CD is in play. Thanks for asking...good question. Welcome home class. We've come a long way. - RIP Prince

If we're comparing relative like-with-like (eg. not comparing Prince's early '00s jazzy stuff with '80s Time albums)... no, not really.
I *did* like the Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 albums before I was into Prince's main catalogue in a big way, but it would be a bold call for me to say those are better albums than his main early '80s output *now*.

If you say, "I like What Time Is It more than 20Ten" then you're really not saying anything. My answer: no albums, but I like the songs Prince wrote for other acts in the early 90s, such as The Voice, Love Thy Will Be Done etcetera, better than what's on Diamonds And Pearls or . If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

VaultCurator said: This is a good question. The Family album from start to finish was his best side project. St. Paul, then and now, sounds closer to Prince than anyone ever has. [Edited 2/4/20 8:00am]

I loved the Jill Jones album (full album) and Taja Seville (most songs) also quite a lot back in the days...
And The Time Pandemonium was also on heavy rotation...
But first price goes to : Carmen Electra (not!)

Maybe not whole albums, but there's a bunch of songs from throughout P's career that he handed over to other artists that he coulda kept for himself and woulda been nice additions to his own albums. Off the dome, I would say Mutiny and High Fashion off the Family Album. Another song I wish he woulda held on to is With This Tear. Would kill to hear that sung by him. Ok, I guess I'm digressing

- "Ice Cream Caste" is a damn good album ! But to say it's better than "Purple Rain" ? The song "The Beautiful Ones" or even "Computer Blue",both, are sxtand alone better songs than the whole "Ice Cream Castle" album. - My pick is like already stated here by someone, "The Exodus" album. Which is far more better than the by then released "Gold" album imho. Slap me! - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)
