I still have my original "Soft and Wet" bought when it was released but my major leap into Prince came in 1983.

lol That was the song that first exposed me to Prince and I had the same response. However, I didn't have much appreciation for him beyond the hits until the early 90's. Some would say I didn't become a true fan until about 9 or 10 years ago. That's when I first heard the boots and as most of you know, you don't truly know Prince until you've heard the unreleased music. That said, I haven't heard anything he did post Lotus Flower. Actually, I heard Planet Earth (?) once and... I figured I'd dig into the old stuff and catch up with what he was doing later. Of course, that never came to be. neutral

Since the late 90s. I may have already owned a couple of Prince's albums prior as I was listening to all kinds of artists and genre's throughout the 90s (I was born mid 80s so I was pretty young and trying to consume as much music as possible).

It's wasn't until 97/98ish that I became a proper fan and started collecting as many albums / singles / videos as I could. 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic' was the first album I bought that was brand new out.

.

Earliest clear Prince memory was about 2000/'01 when I was 13/14; bought my first Prince album (The Hits/B-Sides) in about '09/'10 when I would've been 22/23; became a slightly more committed (but still fairly casual) fan in about '14 (at 27) when a few friends passed digital copies of his discography and the Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 albums to me; only became a serious fan from '18 (at 31).

It took me long enough, lol.

My sister got me into I Wanna Be Your Lover...but became full fledged in 1980 as a result of Dirty Mind. First heard the full album after my friend snuck a tape player into our grade school classroom...life changing.

The first time I have seen him was in the video for Little Red Corvette. I found him interesting and unusual.
I became a fan when Purple Rain got big and his music was everywhere. My brother bought that record and it really changed the way I listened to music. Especially When Doves Cry and The Beautiful Ones were so different from anything else I have heard before. My brother forbade me playing his records but I still couldn t stop hearing those songs when he was not around.

I consider myself a lifelong fan since then although with short breaks inbetween. I was very disappointed in Graffiti Bridge and his Jehova preaching from 2000-2004 turned me off for a while too. In my opinion Princes best period was in the mid 80s and the mid90s.

Besides Prince I also listen to a lot of other music.

Athough I remember hearing songs from 1999 on the radio, I got hooked during Purple Rain. Started to seriously collect his records in the early 90's.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

What is a fan?

Or rather: where do I start counting?

Does listening to the tapes recorded from the radio count?

Does buying first CD's count?

Does attending a first concert count?

Does watching a first show on TV count?

Does attending a first aftershow count?

Or does, after having (heard) all albums, and still liking them all count?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I used to listen to my ex boyfriend's 3121 album a lot. That was my first real exposure to Prince. I knew of Fury and Incense & Candles long before I heard Let's Go Crazy or Alphabet Street. I wouldn't have considered myself a fan at that time though. It wasn't until I went to see him in concert in 2011 that I became a fan. Went to see him twice that year. Once was at something called NPG Music and Arts Festival in Denmark and the other was here in Dublin. Two incredible shows.

I've been to loads of concerts but none like those. You know a show is special when you're there dancing away and singing along to songs you've never heard. I even got a chance to meet him at the Denmark one. Spoke to him for a few seconds. He made fun of me for being on the X Factor 😂.

Those two shows and that (very) brief "conversation" made me a fan. Went back and listened to his entire discography from 20Ten back to For You.

A fan is when you consider yourself a fan. Only you have that answer.

Maybe when you just couldn't believe he good he was?

We could always look up Webster's dictionary and find the definition. But ---

I know I became a FAN when I just couldn't believe he was saying all those thing that I thought and I just couldn't believe those feelingsa and those raw ripping emotions and screams were coming out of the speakers.

Since '83 I think. One of my earliest memories is seeing the 1999 video.
