"Before [Prince] died, he offered to produce an album for Lizzo."

https://www.rollingstone....ys-937009/

.

In Minneapolis, Lizzo was rapping again, and at the time was one of the few black women in the city doing so. She and Eris soon formed the Chalice, another Destiny’s Child-inspired girl group. The group became local celebrities. Then they got the ultimate co-sign for any Minneapolis musician: Prince was a fan. In 2014, Lizzo and Eris appeared on Plectrumelectrum, an album by Prince and his backing band 3rdeyegirl, singing on “Boytrouble.” Prince invited them back to perform at Paisley Park; later, His Royal Badness even played a solo piano show for them and a few others. Before he died, he offered to produce an album for Lizzo.

.

For Lizzo, this kind of respect was life-changing. “I used to be so upset that I never had co-signs,” she told Rolling Stone in 2018. “I was like, ‘I’m too weird for the rappers and too black for the indies.’ I was just sitting in this league of my own. To be embraced by Prince and co-signed, I am eternally grateful for that.”

it worked out better that P didnt produce her...let her build her own name & brand, instead of being another "female Prince protege"...to be honest, its not like his work for/with for Jill Jones, Carmen Electra, Tamar, Lianne Lahavas, Judith Hill, Andy Allo, etc, created any great results commercially or even artistically

"Boy Trouble" has a funky more old school Prince vibe to the intrumental elements. Always liked that aspect of it.

I just heard her live concert in Miami on Sirius XM and her show definitely has a Princely vibe. I was really impressed.

I can see why she's so sucessful, despite her maniacal need for attention.

Then again Prince too was shocking in his day.

I think he could have produced a song or two for her album, something along the lines of what he did for Madonna in the 80s. That way, she'd still be a stand-alone artist, just with a collab with someone famous. After all, she had Missy Elliott on her last album cool

Pretty sure Lizzo would have marked his biggest talent scouting success, right?

He obviously had major hits with proteges, but as far as discovering real talents that could go on to headline and have major hits they wrote and produced themselves on that level (SNL, opening Grammy's, movie soundtracks)?

Prince(r.i.p.) RARELY gets credit for discovering yet another female extraordinaire talent Lizzo. I guess because he refused to take a picture with her.

i doubt very seriously that P would be cosigning or condoning all her visually provocative shenanigans in her music videos and her NBA game hijinks... other than early on with Vanity/Appolonia6 and Carmen Electra...the female acts he worked with exuded class and dignity...especially late in his career...you dont see any flesh and games from 3rd Eye Girl and Andy Allo and Judith Hill, or Liv Warfield or Lianne Lahavas...you wont see Shelby J twerking her naked ass (although im sure it would look amazing😎) at a NBA game...

It's a pretty cool album. A shame that more people haven't heard songs like Sunday in the Park, Holla & Shout and Redhead Stephchild. Kept Woman is great, but I actually prefer the Bria Valente version.

Although Sunday in the Park was one of 3 tracks from the album released on the download-only Prelude To Tamar EP.

Oh please, Rita Ora has been topless in numerous pics.

.

Oh, and then there's Prince at the 1991 MTV VMAs.

Prince is dead. No one knows what he would or wouldn't do - or who he would or wouldn't produce - now.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I agree, besides what difference does it make now, he never got to do it, and he never will.

It wasn't a promo but the regular Japanese release that was sent to record stores in Japan and a few days later were recalled but some were already sold early.

I think the idea is he really wasn't put off by collaborating with women who had a racey image. He didn't make Beyonce stop grinding on him and lower her hemline at the Grammy's either (though that was 2004). Hannah liked to show her legs off in the hot pants?

To your point, if Lizzo blew up, and he thought she was making a fool of herself, she would have got that 2am phone call and a Bill Cosby lecture. He might have also known she has to work it out on her own and remembered what it was like.

there is a BIG difference in Rita Ora or Beyonce being "racy", and Lizzo being classless and tacky.

Totally agreed! I could never understand why Orgers seemed to detest that track. FUNKY.

That's why Janelle Monae(whom I met at a ULTRA private) waited to get raunchy after Prince(r.i.p.) transitioned. giggle
