Did he "flirt with" prog? I'd say so - ATWIAD has elements of jazz, classical, music concrete, and some esoteric lyrics without being as lyrically out there as Lovesexy or The Rainbow Children. A few of Prince's tracks are arguably prog, with a modernist collage or song-suite approach to composing pop ("3 Chains o' Gold" comes to mind, as do "Love 2 the 9's" and "Joint 2 Joint"... if you think about it, Stevie Wonder and P-Funk approached prog in the 1970s, and the songs listed about have more complicated structures than anything on Songs in the Key of Life). Emancipation's structure of three hour-long discs corrsponding to the pyramids and numerology and whatever else Prince was tripping on is so prog King Crimson would stop noodling to wonder what he's on about.

And let me add that "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech Version)" is absolutely prog.

Yeah sure, that's what websites that are run by reputable publishers do.

Prog rock is one of the most misused terms.


ATWIAD isn't very prog like, but like the flute (or whatever it is as the opening sounds in the title track kinda fits) or the loop in Tambourine, there are these motifs used that you might hear a prog rock group using. But Paisley Park, Pop Life, America (the guitar has moments though), Raspebery Berret, Tempation, are just not prog.... and that's the heart and soul of the record. But I guess the headline just says "flirted".

..... you could argue Purple Rain has elements of prog though, Computer Blue being a strong case, and the backwards parts of tracks.

NEWS is probably his most Proggy record.

Oh heaven's no. ATWIAD was straight up psychadelia.

RUSH is prog rock.

No way.

Maybe progressive... but it's not what I think of as "prog".

When I think of "prog" I think of weird time signatures and angular melodies. Most of ATWIAD is 4/4 and the melodies are very accessible.
