Prince & Miles

I recall when attending the "1st Celebration" that Prince not only owns some Miles Davis artwork, but has the rights to alot of Miles's music? Can anyone confirm this? In the past year I've really learned to appreciate jazz, especially Miles Davis. In reading Miles' autobiography, he mentioned that he and Prince were close, I know of the song Prince wrote for the ablum "Tutu", however it was pulled at the last moment. If anyone has more Prince/Miles info please pass it along. Thanks

The track you meantioned that was meant for "Tutu" is called "Can I Play With U" (aka "Red Riding Hood") and you can find it on the old Jewel Box bootleg.

Prince also invited Miles to play at the 1987 New Years Eve Benifit Concert at Paisley Park. Miles and his guitarist Foley McCreary played along on a couple of tunes.

Miles also played on "Sticky Wicked", a track composed and performed by Prince for Chaka Khan and was released on her album "CK" in 1988.

Miles also played Prince's "Movie Star" an many live concerts during the late 80s.

As far as I know, Prince doesn't own any of Miles stuff. Although they were signed to Warner Bros at the same time. Who knows, maybe there's a collaboration between them that has yet to be released that Prince owns on his Paisley Park label?

There are heaps of rumors about many other Davis+Prince collaborations, but these three are the only "official" ones. Years ago, before The Hits, when "Power Fantastic" was a bootleg, many thought that was Miles playing trumpet, when in fact it was Atlanta Bliss. Also on many live bootlegs, the track "Slow Love" is credited to Prince and Miles Davis, when in fact it was written by Prince and CAROL Davis. These are just a few of the "mistakes" bootlegers make!

Why are there so many Prince/Miles collabos on the internet? Are they simple fraud songs?

Yeah most of them are. Most of them are live concert tracks that feature Atlanta Bliss on trumpet and the bootlegers claim that it's Miles.

I play the trumpet, and I own close to 100 Miles CDs, so I like to think I can tell when it's Miles or not. Yes most are frauds, except for the ones I meantioned in the above post.

That's how I got into Prince - through collecting Miles! Check out Live In Munich (DVD) if you like his 80s stuff, that's my most recent addition, and it STANKS (...that's good!)

Yeah, I wanna get that "Live In Munich" DVD. Have to order that off the net!

Ive got the "Live In Paris" (that seems to be the only one that available in Australia), love "Human Nature" - KENNY ROCKS!

I love "Live In Paris", but Ive heard that "Live in Munich" is better. And cuz it has Movie Star on it, I want it even more!

Actually Movie Star isn't on it. It's the only track from the concert that is ommited (maybe Prince &/or his contract had something to do with this??). But it is 100x better than Miles in Paris. It also features Marilyn Mazur, a female percussionist who is simply amazing!

That's strange, at shopping websites, it lists Movie Star as a track on the DVD. Is it printed on the casing, but deleted on the DVD?

Or was it released with Movie Star, but when P found it, they removed it from subsequent copies?

That's my best guess as well. I don't know how all that contract shit works? But it definately ain't on the DVD!

Miles only played for a few minutes. Foley didn't play at all, if I'm not mistaken.

In an interview from a few years ago, Prince said he owns recordings with Miles playing the piano. Nobody except Prince himself seems to know anything about these recordings, but I don't know why he would lie.

"The H Man" is actually "Amandla", from the Miles Davis album of the same name. It was written by Marcus Miller. Prince has nothing to do with it.
