product placement in songs

Just looking at casual mentions of brand products in songs, and deciding whether their use was deliberate (as part of a rhyme), actual product placement, casual name dropping, or just unimportant throwaway lines.

7up

Cap'N Crunch

Magic Shave

Almond Joy

Trojans

Tootsie Pop

are just a few i can think of so far...

This is what it's like in the dream factory...

in 1992 Prince wrote and recorded a song called "Coca-Cola" for the C-C Company.

A year later the Coca-Cola Company sponsored his ACT II tour.

Another unreleased soda commercial was the song 'Uh Huh' de wrote for Pepsi in 1991.

Which boots is it on please? I'd always heard the rumours that he recorded a track but never actually heard it.

RIP sad

Hey! Blatant loud one.

Unfortunately you're right.

Found this info (from 2005 I believe) :

-

"please allow me to set the record straight...My name is Peter Cofield
and I composed the uh huh song for diet pepsi in 1990...I wrote the tune and
collborated on the lyrics with Al Merrin who worked for the agency involved..
Prince heard the tune with Ray singing it and then decided to his own "real"
song."

Well....everyone is right. Cofield and Merrin wrote what Prince used as a chorus; Prince wrote the verses and verse melody.

Here's what Ray Charles sang:

"These days, as soon as you get a hit song, everyone thinks they can sing it better." falloff
