David Rusan asking fans to rename the Cloud guitar

David Rusan posted on his FB https://www.facebook.com/...itarworks/ asking fans to rename the Cloud guitar because the Prince Estate has bought the name. The fact that the creator has to say "begins with the letter C" is mindblowing.

(From FB page)

"I have a question for all the fans that follow my posts (and I appreciate you all so very much!)
Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been calling my guitars by the name that the originals are known by that begins with the letter "C". Why? Because the Estate bought that name, paying more than I could afford to fork out for it.
I think it's time for me to give mine a new name to refer to them by, I was thinking of a couple:
-the model "C"
the Cirrus (which starts with the letter C and is a you-know-what!)

I would appreciate any opinions on those names and I will gladly consider any others that you come up with!"

"You know, this is funky but I wish he'd play like he used to, old scragglyhead son of a...*smack* OOH!"

The irony here is staggering.

*

Anyhoo - how about "The (insert colour here) Angel" - have the estate trademarked that, too?

*

How about calling it the Slap In The Face? - y'know...cos when Apollonia gives the guitar to The Kid, she gets an ear-ring and a ... it's what the guy probably feels he's got from the estate an' all... lol

*

I'll get my coat.

Well, the most painfully obvious name would be, The Purple Rain guitar. Or the Prince guitar. Or the Prince cirrus, cumulus, stratus. Stratus would work. A word for cloud, sounds familiar like stratocaster. Fog... words for rain. The Apollonia. Loud C -- make it into a circle logo that doubles back on itself, with the c touching the L, different color/font

Someone explain... what's the estate going to do with the name if they don't have guitars to sell? If they wanted an exclusive to sell them, then why didn't they negotiate that instead? Why would they care if the cloud guitar can be sold elsewhere as the cloud guitar, is it better if he sells it as "the guiat the purple one used"?

It definitely cannot be "Model C". That is the name of his other white guitar made by Jerry Auerswald before he made the symbol guitar.

Got that, but I'm still confused (and not for nothing, the link was to sold out items).

It looks like nobody owned the Cloud guitar or the name, and it was knocked off another manufacturer to begin with, who David Rusan doesn't name. He makes custom guitars, but it doesn't sound like he's really in the business of making them in great quantities since he only made a hand full, and Prince started ordering his from someone else. Is that the source of the estates guitars instead?

So is Rusan selling these in any numbers that he needs a name? They're pretty distinct.

Is there that big of a tribute band market?

Rusan built the guitar when Prince asked a guitar version of his Sardonyx bass built by Jeff Levin.

I doubt The Estate has contact with Jeff Levin.

I doubt The Estate has contact with Jeff Levin.

and Jeff took its over all look from a Gibson. Rusan has no real claim to its design.

Jeff Levin built the bass for himself based on a Gibsion Madiolin. But he did not like its balance so he put it up for sale. Andre saw it and liked it and Prince bought it. It is seen the unused video for "I Wanna Be Your Lover."
